I usually only have 2 of my 3 lurchers off lead together unless we are in a very safe place and I know there isn't anything around they are likely to take off after. Any combination of two is fine, but all three together go a bit OTT and recall goes out of the window.

Both my little terrier x are brilliant and very obedient off lead and tend to ignore the hounds and do their own thing, so I usually walk in shifts and take two hounds and one terrier (one lucky hound gets 2 walks!).

I wish I had the option of taking out more than one Whippet...Daisy can walk up to an hour or two without too much affect on her, which isn't bad considering she's nearly 12,with bronchittus and an enlarged heart...and her legs being about 3 inches long lol

I take out Blue alone for longer walks and usually meet a few of her friends along the way :D

Between 5 & 6 if I'm on my own. 10+ if I'm with Tony or Vicky. It's flat open land we take them over so we can generally see what's coming and they tend to mill about around us. Quite often I'll bump into Vicky walking her lot and both our groups of dogs will greet each other quite happily. From an early age the pups are discouraged from grabbing each other whilst running mainly because they can get ideas about tackling when they're racing and we try to encourage them to run in the same direction together rather than all over the place.
Pik of (I think) 8 of them at the beach

Loving this picture, its fabulous

aslong as it was an enclosed felild we could run all 12 of togethere our problem wasnt they playing togethere more if a few of them saw non pointys they would be after them. i do tent to let them off in groups though cosb i know forrest darcey lacey and indy can go off togthere anywere they ahpply stay with us and if they do mess about laceys soon rounded them up and brought them back. scarlet needs more watching as she can get a little to bostruse sometimes and need to be watched. the greyhounds all just plod new except for cally so she has a run with the whippets but shes very sensbel and only goes in strats lines witch is handy. Talula may be nearly 10 now but shes stil a nutter and her ruby and ninny are buggers with other dogs but love to run and run so they all go out realy early togethere for a blast.

I have found if we had got a new dog and its been a tackler letting it of with the grumpest dog soon has it in its place and stups the messing. its a shame they dont get to run and play free trgethere but it takes work as pups to do it

:D We meet up with Oscar`s family on wimbledon common and take some whippet friends along too..........our biggest gang so far has been 11 and they were fine!! :D

Mine regularly free run with others and are fine (although Tyg will bark) ... but when I run the three together they do tend to bowl one another over and I've noticed one or twice recenty that Finn and Taran are possibly combining efforts to knock Tyg off his feet so will be watching for this now. No teeth are involved though, it's all barging. I also limit Taran's free running still ... the older two get to blow off steam while he is still on the lead and then he is allowed to join in.

Jac how do you get yours to all run in the same direction? Mine tend to run in circles chasing each other

apart from the sexual predator that is (w00t)

I think it depends on the age and temperament of individual dogs.

One of mine once bumped into the other one and broke his leg :( so I am always careful now.

I also know of someone els who ran 3 together 2 of them bumped into the third one and broke its back :( poor dog had to be put to sleep as he was in agony.

After this one of the remaining 2 ran into his owners leg and broke that and he had to have 6 weeks in traction!

This was many years ago now but it made me very carefull.

Scary stuff  I have to admit to sometimes watching mine with me heart in my mouth ... but we do try to limit the body contact and even running solo carries a risk.

I've noticed sometimes K and Zan will get Sada in the middle

of them and make her run along squeezed in tight

Hi I'm lucky & have 5miles of beach to run on. I have no problem free running my 4 very boystrious boys 7years, 2years 6 months & 13weeks. My friends dogs come as well 2 Pyrinian mountain Dogs a Malamoot & an Alsation. We meet a regular gang of friends & don't seem to have a problem.

Well away from roads, I let my three off but Tilly gets 'that look' and I just know she's going to do a runner. Pip, who has always been wonderful on recall, will now do a runner if Tilly does and Gracie is the best of the lot. She loves running with them but in woods will not go anywhere unless she can still see me and on the beach the three of them are fantastic, with Gracie showing what whippets are really good at - flat out, poetry in motion, running! Her recall is absolutely brilliant but, as she's only just coming up to 8 months, I'm sure it will change, especially when the hormones kick in. For me the beach is the best because no one does a runner the only down side being that Gracie sometimes gets above herself and drags the other two around by their collars! They're too gentle to really get tough with her and tell her off properly - just a few little growls and snarls which she completely ignores!

I can run any combination of my girls in two's with no problemat all but as soon as i add the third they get a bit manic. I have

to then muzzle K as she will get so excited she grabs the others

by their back legs and drags them down. So she has to wear it

to prevent her hurting them as she has left puncture wounds.

Now i have Tala i think they will be free running in two's. That

way it should stay calmer and i shouldn't have to muzzle K.

I love to see them all running together, i just wish i could get

them to calm down. I suppose im wanting the impossible,

how do you get on with yours?
Hi fairly new to site, you have lovely dogs i have a small fawn bitch 19mths she broke her leg at 8mths my heart is in my mouth when i let her run its the way the go round in circles scares me but its great to see her run at ful speed.

hmmmm. amber alone, or around strange dogs, no trouble.

dante alone, no trouble UNLESS there happens to be a carrier bag nearby, doesnt like 'rude' dogs, but behaves

purdey never off lead when any other dogs around, she wont behave since she was attacked at 8mths old

amber plus dante, bags aside, fine

amber plus purdey, no way in hell, not EVER

dante plus purdey, fine until other dogs nearby, then she gets leashed pronto

and never would i attempt all three.

when i used to dog walk when i was young, the only two dogs i couldnt put together were my gsd and another gsd, they got on brilliantly, knew each other from pups, but simply were too boisterous combined for me to handle as they grew. nearly got run over when they decided to wrestle each other halfway across a main road, tangled me up in their leads and pulled me over.

has anyone else noticed how many rude dogs there are the last few years?? really winds me up, and daft owners laughing it off with 'oh they wont bite/theyre only playing/awwwww theyre being friendly' etc etc etc
Hi yes in my park theres a dog walker who walks 4/5 at one time they run over to brie who is spinning round yelping shedoesnt like big dogs , all the girl does is laugh and i have to leave park . :(

Altogether here no problems...but having said that Kobi is much slower than the other two...

and takes life at his own pace... :clown:

Don't think it's fair or responsible of the dogwalker to be letting off multiple dogs in the presence of yours. If they're chasing yours then her dogs are out of control and I'd politely point this out to her. It's not fair that you or your dog should feel intimidated and it has the potential for making your own dog scared of all dogs in general.

Like I've said, I free run a lot of dogs together but if we see a person or another dog they go back on their leads immediately. For one we have no idea of the character of the dog that's come onto the fields and I don't think it's acceptable for someone having a pleasant walk to be accosted by a gang of whippets.

There's also the very real danger that if one of those dogs in the pack decides to get aggresive with yours or yours simply starts crying out that the whole pack will descend on your dog.

These situations with parks are a nightmare but I don't see why all can't get along if the woman considers your dilemma instead of thinking it's amusing. I hope she's ameniable to some kind of compromise, if not I'd either avoid that park or alter your walking time. I can appreciate sometimes this isn't possible, especially with the limited daylight in winter and I honestly think why on earth should you have to alter your routine but the fact is if this person insists on being selfish you've got too much to lose by risking it. :(

It really, really irritates me that there are people still out there who think it's acceptable for their dog to be offlead when your approaching with another dog. I'd of thought it was just plain good manners to leash dogs up.

I find 4 free running where there are other dogs can cause problems.

Fortunately the oldies do not create the PACK syndrome to such a degree which can be a problem with four younger dogs.

Lilly and Toddy off the lead can be a problem.

Toddy wants to play with every dog he sees and since being on a lead for 2 weeks after his neutering, his recall has gotten even worse. It is OK if the other dog wants to play!

Lilly is defensive and attacks other dogs. She is nervous and this is what she tends to do. What she needs is a younger bitch to be pack leader :) :) :) but 4 is plenty right now.

If I see another dog before the dogs do, then I put the leads on. Lilly is happy to come for the lead, she obviously feels more secure.

I must admit I err on the side of caution when it comes to running my dogs free. If I sense that there is ANY CHANCE whatsoever of them interfering with each other when they are running, I bring out the lead or exercise them separately. With the speed at which they move, the chance of spinal injuries or fractures is JUST TOO GREAT to my liking.

Also the PACK AND HUNTING INSTINCT is so strong that the more there are the more likely they are to become unmanageable under certain circumstances.

I also NEVER exercise the oldies with the youngsters, as they tend to forget their age, and then suffer for the nex 24 hours. -_-

I think each individual's circumstances differ and common sense should prevail. But I would rather my dog was exercised a tad too little than expose him to unnecessary danger.

We let our three off together (2 Whippets and a Collie X). We mainly walk along the canal towpath locally where they run in a straight line and you can see well ahead.

Dolly doesn't really run much (lazy girl!!), but walks beside me. Remmy just loves running, but has good recall. Bobby is quite wilful and often ignores us when we call him, but he never runs off.

I am always careful where I let them off - my favourite place is large empty beach. :) I always put them back on the lead when I see other people/dogs approaching.

I have recently been dog sitting for a couple of weeks in Sussex and therefore doing a lot of dog walking. I was amazed at how many dog owners had no control over their dogs and didn't seem at all bothered when they charged up to us. (Often Labrador owners :- )

It all depends on the dogs who I haveout . Montee likes to run with his squuky toy in his mouth , and whilst he has this he leaves every one alone. he will however chase Peanut , and only peanut , if he drops it . mikkee and Libbee are usually muzzled if loose togther , cos they get excited ands have been known to `spar` I can let 5-6 off togther though

its strange but India . plays with daugter Peanut and Mikke plays with daugther Meloody, bless , Harvee , Libbe and Buffee do their own thing
