Was woke last night by my 12 yr old Lurcher howling like a wolf. Never heard a dog howling it was very scary. When i came down stairs he was staring at me like he didnt know me . Every time i got back in to bed he started again. It was so bad i sat at the bottom of the stairs talking to him . Does anyone know why he would be howling. Pam.

aww my ollie does this if i take tia to bed with me and leave him downstairs ,howls like a banshy he does  he dun care if i take any of the others but if he cant see his tia hes off :D

Hi Nicky . All my other dogs were downstairs . Could be a bitch in season some where . Or his marbles are going . Hope he dont do it again tonight.

Hi,

My cocker and my cousin's jack both make a really chilling howling noise sometimes when they are asleep. It sounds like they are in terrible pain. When I go to my cocker (doesn't happen that often though) he doesn't seem distressed at all and just goes back to sleep. I'd never heard it before I heard my cousin's dog do it and I don't know of any other dogs that do it! But it sends shivers down my spine.

Not really shedding any light here but just thought I'd share my experiences :)

Simone

My greyhound does it, scares us silly!!!!!! Usually it's because she has heard a fox, or voices up the road. It does sound weird!!!!! (w00t)

My mothers old scary wives tale used to be that if a dog howled in the middle of the night - someone had died. Now I dont believe that, but it used to scare the hell out of me when I was a kid  Don't worry I suspect he's heard something outside thats set him off.

My old girl Betsy only howled once or twice on both occassions my OH was playing a Chemical Brothers track (w00t)

My dog howled along to the piano solos in Coldplay's song 'Trouble'....that's the only time he ever howled. It became his party piece really - start the song and he howled along every time, he even threw his head right back and closed his eyes, little clown.

It is really weird when this happens...mine have only done it a couple of times...its usually Oscar. (w00t)

One night he was fast asleep in his bed in our living room, the TV playing when all of a sudden he stood up half asleep, tipped his head back and howled right out...

scared the living daylights out of us all...

He then curled up and went right back to sleep :huggles:
