My cousin recently visited Tarassjeppi, Lapland and whilst he was there he went on a husky riding experience. He sent me some great photo’s and information about his time there so I thought I would add it the forum!
The first order of the day was to wrap up warm because the weather outside was set at -10 degrees. After being briefed on our trip ahead we were taken to the huskies. We could hear them barking and howling with excitement.
There were 6 dogs to 2 humans per sleigh and once we set off all of the dogs were silent. The only sound is them puffing and crunching on the snow.
The first toilet stop was pretty awful - can you imagine the smell produced by 60 dogs worth of faces and urine!?
But once we got going again we spent 17km travelling through lots of great scenery.
Once we arrive back at the centre the Huskies all settle down very quickly in their enclosures, exhausted from their run.
The dogs begin their training at around 1 year of age but don’t begin to pull sleighs until 2 years of age. They start by working 1-2 days and then when they can handle it they work 5 days a week maximum and work until they are around 10 years old as long as in good health.
The youngest at the centre was 10 weeks old and the oldest was 13!
From what I can tell the Huskies were all very happy and excited to be pulling the sleighs.
What are your opinions about Husky riding?
