I have owned my first whippet, Stanley, for 7 months now, and have become addicted, one is not enough! Has anyone got any advice on when is a good time to look for a friend for Stan, I'm a little unsure whether to get one sooner rather than later, or to wait until he has matured a little more?

By the way, I have tried to add a pic of the little man, but it says theres not enough space, any ideas what I'm doing wrong? (I'm not exactly a whizz on computers :( )

I know what you mean and I'd be interested in the responses you get on this subject. My Kelpie is a lovely friendly chap who hates having other dogs acting all tough with him. I socialise him as much as possible and usually it's always fine but there's a chap we sometimes meet who walks three terriers and their combined bully barking really bothers him. At least they'd never catch him! I reckon we need a bigger gang - a lurcher posse.

I know exactly what you mean, Stan is so friendly with other dogs but turns and runs if another dog starts barking, especially small ones for some reason! He loves to run with other dogs, but most can't keep up the pace for more than a couple of mins, he needs another whippet or lurcher to keep up with him!

Have sussed the pic problem, I think...

I originally had Digit to be a friend for our greyhound Audrey .... which worked wonderfully well. Then we split up and he was an only dog.

It took me 9 months to find the right friend for him (well, about 2 months to find his friend and the rest of the time waiting to get him

But it was absolutely the right thing to do - imo dogs need doggy company - i spend most of my free time with em, but I'm not fast enough to race round the park at top whippet speed to burn off all that excess whippie-energy......nor am I up for a spot of rumbly mouth wrestling/bottom sniffing/ear licking or any other similar doggy passtimes.

when i first joined here people told me that whippets are addictive and they were blummin right - am stopping at 2 though (at least while I still have the cats :- " )

Whippets are very socialable dogs and love the company of their own kind :huggles:

One end of the scale we got Holly when Frankie was 6 months old. On the other end - my mum and dad got their Whippet x last year when their old boy was around 14! Both of these new additions settled in no problem at all.

I would just say that make sure you are happy with the training and behaviour of your first dog before you think about introducing a second

I have always been a single dog owner until now (w00t) .......anyways Oscar was 8 almost 9 months old when I got Kobi and I worried two males wouldnt get along..... and now I have three... :- " I dont think there is a 'perfect' age......just whenever the time is right for you :)

I agree with Janis - if you feel you can cope, then go for it! Now you have to decide whether you want a boy or a girl! :- " Personally I think a lot of that is down to personal preference but it also depends on the dog you already have and what you think would suit your lifestyle. :)

I think this is a really good point. Pups will follow the example of an established older dog, and and they'll copy bad habits as well as good.

Aww Stan is lovely.

I am in much the same situtation as you ... Sidney is now 20 months old and I wanted another from when he was 9 months old.

We are in the process of buying another house and moving but I have got my other half to agree that we will start to look for our second whippy from September time :p

I am a little worried that Sid is going to get a little jelous as he is very much my shadow who whines when I cuddle my OH

We will just have to see.....

Best of luck xxx

One is never enough!!!!  ....... Have you noticed how a whippet will spot another whippet instantly even across a crowded room? (w00t) When you feel the time is right you'll have to get another one to keep the lovely  Stanley company

....and YES whippets definately grow on you!! :- "

That's exactly what I thought Nicola! But you know what happened with Muffin & Jonah!! :- " Instead of Jonah following Muffin's 'good' ways, it was the other way around and we had a couple of puppies on our hands for 6 months! Muffin is now calming down again though - so hopefully Jonah will follow suit before too long! :sweating:

Go for it

We got another whippie for our first one when she was 17months old and it was wonderful to watch them have fun together.

I reckon whippies really know their own breed and love company.

(I have seven dogs now... so be warned.....  )

I got my first whippet and planned to get another when he was a year old. Long story short i waited 4 months. That was over 2 years ago and now Daisy has just had a litter of 6. So my 2 might shortly become 3. (Or 8, im waging and internal war) (w00t)

I am very interested as Izzy is 16 months old and we would desperately love another, advice please on how to convince my Dad he can cope with doggy sitting 2 whilst we are both at work?

Some days he thinks it's a good idea, then he doubts he can cope! :(

i hoping to get other one aswell. Currently trying to get our place on the market buy a house and get jobs all a bit stressfull but once we get sorted out i would like another whippet.

We have never for one moment regretted getting a second whippet.

Talulla has never been so happy now she has Bean by her side!!!!

Seeing the two of them chase each other around, go hunting for rabbits together and then come home and insist on sleeping side by side......... what could be nicer?

We are about to move to North East Scotland where we will have some land and the beach on our doorstep - so i am already dreaming of number three

if it feels right - then do it!!
