There's a healthy debate going on in the "Seeding" topic. However there seems to be need for a new topic as the issues of "How to make an open run even more to the members tastes" seem to be rearing their heads.

There's the debate of the open draw for example and the opinions surrounding it.

I have another idea to help. By the time the programmes have all been printed, gate money taken and the first batch of dogs gotten ready we have used another half hour or more of daylight up (don't forget the heat in Summer, I know we all want to get racing underway ASAP for the sake of our pets).

So here we go, remember folks discussion, if you don't think certain points are workable please explain your reasoning, no comments "ad hominem" if you please.

1. Gate money taken as soon as the gates are open to the stadium, almost everyone has to weigh their dogs in and most people are coming inside the stadium for a cuppa anyway  . This way it's a matter of course not a big sigh and snooty comment matter as we all have to troop back outside at 12:30 or later.

2. A "programme tannoy" operated. Races announced as soon as they are drawn, before programmes are printed. This way owners can go and get the correct colours on their dogs immediately, no waiting around for a programme then dashing off to get the dog ready if they are in the first race. This way also the announcement "racing to start at xx time" can be strictly adhered to, you're not there to put your dog in the trap bang on time, you don't run.

Programmes can then be handed out as soon as they are ready whether it is before start time or after, the announcer can always re-announce the results for people to mark down.

IMO this would save time, weigh in could finish at 11am, no need to queue outside the stadium as most have already paid (maybe people could be stamped on their wrist of have a sticker to show they've paid, this way late comers could also be caught). Dogs could be gotten ready as the draw is being made and announced. Racing could get underway at a specified time and in the time between the programme announcement and the specified start time, the programmes could be printed  .

And at what time of the morning would the com get to see to there own dogs never mind even have a cuppa

Great theory be nice to see if it worked any volunteers , suppose the open draw would be no good as members would be out side getting there dogs ready

I'm sure with careful planning some form of rota could be worked out.

Volunteers - all you have to do is ask  , I live locally to a few tracks and when I'm driving for myself I can't see why I can't arrive early to lend a hand. I don't see why the locals can't be rounded up to help with the morning tasks, from a personal point of view not having to travel more than say 30mins to a local track means my dogs are already sorted, on weight etc. before I leave and they haven't been cooped up in the back of the car for a few hours.

The volunteer could grab a "witness" and their dogs could be weighed as soon as they arrived. Then they could sit on the gate "stamping" people and taking their gate money, putting the dogs on the scales, recording entries and taking monies. Possibly only one or two committee members would be needed then to oversee the proceedings, allowing others to organise their dogs.

I'm sure there are many members who are willing to help if approached, though I'm sure a lot, like myself can all to easily assume that the committee are getting along swimmingly without them "getting in the way". At the end of the day the Committee's are just like everyone else, part of an organisation/club who are not paid to give up their time. But they do it anyway  .

some good points Fleesh speaking for the NNWRF we have tried collecting gate money from gates opening but believe me when both entrances are open it is impossible to catch everyone, some will go to great lengths to duck out of paying the £3 unfortunately so to have someone sat at the turnstile for a couple of hours has proved to be a waste of their time. instead as soon as scales are down we ask people to leave the stadium and pay to come in whist they are doing so the progs are being drawn and printed and are available on entry they then have a good 15 minutes to get their dogs ready also giving the committee that 15 minutes or less to get their own dogs ready. UNFORTUNATELY SOME OF THE COMMITTEE DO HAVE DOGS TO RACE AS WELL and we get little enough time to prepare them as it is same for any one else involved in running an event

NO NEED TO FRET ABOUT DAYLIGHT HOURS THEY HAVE FLOOD LIGHTS ON THE BENDS and THE DAYLIGHT HOURS SUFFICE ON THE STRAIGHT

Having said that racers can help keeping things moving by being at the traps in good time there are allways the same few that keep others waiting and not neccessarily those with a few dogs to run more often than not those with only one maybe its time the 3rd call and your out rule was adhered to more strictly

If it's halfway judge I'll have to slap you mind (w00t)

I'd be chucked off the job as members would be complaining I'm chucking too many dogs out :- " .

Hardest job in racing lol... thats apart from cleaning the field on a Tuesday morning :x after weekend event at swallows-nest ...where some people don't clean up after the dogs

this is to do with the straights ( only 1 more bend open) but wasnt there something along the lines of racing the scratch whilst the rest of the programme was being drawn? i think in saw this @ only 1 open then never again dont know why coz i think that cud work quite nicely.

cant see whats wrong with the way things are now :( the committees have enough to do or are they not allowed any time to see to there own dogs  all we hear is change this change that open draws etc Ive said it before its a wonder anyones willing to do the jobs :( especially on the fed as we dont even take expenses not even for fuel o:) i think more backing for committees is needed  not moaning at you for ideas fleesh but bloody hell and all that :) :D ive loved this sport for a long time now but sometimes wonder :( especialy after saturdays performance with some members moaning over you know who why didnt someone who fet strongly enough about it go and tell the man instead of sitting twisting all day i well thats my feelings and rant done with

 sorry fleesh meant to post this in other topic :b

No probs Gary.

Linda gave a valid reason why having the gate money at/before weigh in was not feasible (just a pity it's down to members not willing to pay their way). :(

And I've told Dee if she tells me to be halfway judge I'm going to slap her (w00t)

At least now if someone at a meeting complains "why this, why that" then there are some responses available here for them to view at their leisure :huggles: .

Some of us work hard at clubs week in and week out sometimes Saturdays and Sundays and run our own opens too - so in fact when attending other opens it is nice sometimes to run your dogs and not do the work. That does not mean that we do not appreciate the people who are doing the work and would not help if we were asked to and by attending we are supporting them, and by running clubs we are keeping the sport going without clubs eventually we wont have anywhere to train our open class dogs. As for ideas i'm sure they are just that not meant as a downer on people who are doing the work. My personal opinion is if someone suggests something or gives advise you have two options either take it or leave it, your choice ;)

Karen (for steve as he never knows who it is on our addy  ~)
