A few months back, I was having a problem with my two not coming back on the common. They were running over to play with other dogs, Fynn would start humping the other dog, dog would get cross, Archie would feel obliged to pile in and protect his pack mate  . The way I dealt with it was to go and buy some cheap salami from the supermarket, cut it into tiny pieces, and before we went out, give them some and call it treat. They then associated the word "treat" with this delicios morsel VERY quickly. Whenever a situatuion occured where I wanted them to come back to me, I would screech TREAT, and low and behold, they were back in an instant. Salami seems to be a desirable food! The other thing I do now is to avoid times when there are a lot of dogs and people around, or take them to the fields where they can't be too much of a pest. I personally feel more than one whippet is quite a handful to free run in public places and they can create flash points due to their nature and speed with other dogs and people. Running one at time is some-thing I will do if I can see a potential problem, and it is Fynn who goes on the lead as he loads the gun and Archie fires the bullet, Arch on his own is never a problem.

Good idea Joanna, i will buy some sausage, cut it up and toast under the grill, i like the idea of shouting treat :D

If you can go somewhere really safe, try letting them off and hiding when they aren't looking. I find once they look for you and you have vanished they tend to be less inclined not to come back. Also, get an Acme 210 whistle ( fishing shop). Its very loud and they will here it. Great tip about the salami.

i really like topics like this, its a general problem that seems to come with all whippets yet still people ask to get more advise on how to fix it, and it is (i hope) a massive help to me, as it can help prepare me for whats to come before its here lol.

so thanks guys keep the whippet probs questions coming.

just a word of encouragement

dont give up and dont lose faith - something like this sometimes isnt a quick fix but slowly slowly you begin to see a difference and that is very rewarding - i think we all want things to be sorted quickly sometimes.

i would do one to one training with each dog seperately - take one out at a time for a while till you see which one is bestter at recall and then you can build things up using the better one as a role model so to speak!

i find mine are copy cats - i use my oldest boy to teach the younger ones and then take the younger ones out alone practising with them all the time - if your problem is very extreme - only take them out when they are hungry and have the tastiest treats going so its a really special reward when they do come back.

if you do go back to basics then you know its nothing youve done wrong and you will see it will come right - whippets are so excitable when they are in a new place and lead each other for the chase and hunt.

do a bit of calm enclosed training for a while instead.

keep us updated

:)

It is very hard with two, especially when they are of different characters. My Jake can be a bit nervous so doesnt go too close to other dogs or people, whereas Izzy loves people and dogs and will take of towards any that she sees from quite a distance away.

We got the help of a dog listerner / trainer who suggested that we change their diet to not include anything with preservatives, additives etc. we also changed their feeding times so that there is about 12 hours either side of each feed. (7am and 7pm). We have been doing this for a couple of weeks and they both seem calmer when they are out and Izzy has stayed with us much more and not run towards people. She still does it but not so much. We use a whistle for recall and she will usually return when we whistle for her.

The feeding regime might be a cooincidence as we have tried hard to keep her with us (treat in hand) or it might be helping in keeping them settled.

Good luck
