I have a 15 year old papillon who, for the last few months, has developed incontinence. For many years he has slept with us in our bedroom, however as his incontinence became worse I was quite literally waking up in a giant dog toilet every morning, and while I was cleaning up the mess he made upstairs he was was downstairs doing it all over again. The house was stinking and I was finding it depressing and unhygienic so I suggested that he stayed downstairs from now on so we can at least confine it to one area. The problem is that he doesn't like being left alone downstairs at night and will bark, whine and howl all night long. This means that nobody gets any sleep and it disturbs our neighbours too. For the last few nights I've been staying downstairs with him and it seems to be working. He settles fine with me there and I can let him out before he starts messing in the house (he does ask to go out- he just doesn't always get there in time). I know it's not ideal because it might be weeks, months or years before I see my bed again but I can't go back to living in a giant dog toilet and I can't tolerate the noise he makes when he's left alone. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone know of any other solutions?
