I have a 15 year old papillon who, for the last few months, has developed incontinence. For many years he has slept with us in our bedroom, however as his incontinence became worse I was quite literally waking up in a giant dog toilet every morning, and while I was cleaning up the mess he made upstairs he was was downstairs doing it all over again. The house was stinking and I was finding it depressing and unhygienic so I suggested that he stayed downstairs from now on so we can at least confine it to one area. The problem is that he doesn't like being left alone downstairs at night and will bark, whine and howl all night long. This means that nobody gets any sleep and it disturbs our neighbours too. For the last few nights I've been staying downstairs with him and it seems to be working. He settles fine with me there and I can let him out before he starts messing in the house (he does ask to go out- he just doesn't always get there in time). I know it's not ideal because it might be weeks, months or years before I see my bed again but I can't go back to living in a giant dog toilet and I can't tolerate the noise he makes when he's left alone. I don't know what else to do. Does anyone know of any other solutions?

Poos and wees ? :(
Rhythmpigs idea sounds good , has to be worth a try as I’m sure your boy isn’t happy being incontinent , tough as they get older :(

I used dog diapers for our elderly dog ... have you taken him to the vets they have some great meds for incontinence
Hi yes we've tried doggy diapers. He doesn't like them and gets very grumpy when we try to put them on him. I think we'll give it another go and hopefully he'll get used to them in time.

It's mostly wees. I'm going to try a doggy playpen and try and get him used to wearing doggy diapers. Hopefully this will make things easier. I know it's not his fault but it gets me down sometimes.

Hope it works out, your dog's life will be better which means your life will be better. Win,win

speaking of diapers make sure your just getting the belly band ones if its just urinary incontinence. they didn't work very well for bax because of his shape but he tolerated them MUCH better than the full diaper.

I read this post and my heart went out to you i thought, this poor lady is tearing herself apart. I wracked my brain trying to think of help for you but could not think of answer. Then this morning I logged on and the kind resourceful members are wading in with useful ideas which sound to me as if they would work what a blessing.

Not sure if it works the same with boys but my girl is on Urilin for her incontinence and we’ve never had an accident since she’s been on it, brilliant stuff and not expensive either :) have a word with your vet :)
