Insurance

I use Petplan for Misty and haven’t had any complaints with them so far.

Whichever company you use my advice is to get quotes for lifelong cover - that means if your pet develops a long term condition like diabetes for example, the cover won't stop at the end of the year.

No medical ins but I do have 3rd party public liabilty

I don't have my dogs insured, I just put money aside in a separate bank account.

My dog isn't prone to serious injury or accident or health issues so this is a better way for me, maybe I'd insure a dog that was more likely to have health problems. Kay's been to the vet for three separate things in nearly 8 years so I'm glad I just have an emergency fund instead of insurance!

Sainsbury's. Same underwriter as PetPlan, slightly cheaper, and double Nectar points for 2 years. Don't forget, insurance will also cover liabilities as well, such as if you dog causes damage and the like.

I'm another that just puts money into an account, have done for many years. (At present the dogs fund makes Folly quite well off, but don't tell her). I do have third party insurance though.

Choose wisely because if/when you have a claim you'll effectively be stuck with that insurer from then on as any subsequent insurer will not cover a pre - existing condition.

I've already had one big claim for Harri in the first 6 months of my policy which is more than the cost of 2 years premiums.

What tier are you on if I can ask?

I have no idea! I didn't realise there were tiers. I'll have to dig out the paperwork when I get a minute.

Ah, in that case we must be on standard then. They've written to us to tell us that next year the cost will go up and the level of cover go down due to our dog's age (he's only 7!), so we're going to review it then.

Is lifetime really worth it

My view is yes - if your dog develops a long term condition, it would not be covered after the renewal date if you didn't have lifetime. So meds for things like epilepsy, diabetes etc would not be covered. What breed of dog do you have, some are at higher risk of certain conditions?

Hi
A red lab, if that helps?

Hip and elbow dysplasia and a number of eye conditions affect labs. The risk is reduced if both parents were treated clear.
