Hi girls,

Just wondered how well whippets and italian greys get on.

We are wanting another dog, we've had a greyhound who sadly passed away last July.. the house felt empty so we got our blue brindle whip, who is the apple of my eye .... we have now decided to get a play mate for him and first thought about another whip... now seeing your pictures and reading your posts, it has got hubby thinking as he loves italian greys.

Would love to know what you think

Thanks in advance :)

When Zoomie was younger the whippies (I have four) thought he was a rabbit and used to chase him round the field which he loved of course! I make sure he has a coat on if he is running with them in case they try to 'grab' him because his thin skin would rip.

Otherwise they cuddle up in beds and sleep together on the sofas in the evening.

The pros and cons of getting an Italian in the first place have to be considered though and that's Pandora's box!!!! Zoomie's nearly 2yrs old and still piddles and poos in the house  . You have to be careful about how 'rowdy' the play is when they're young because they're not as strong as whippets etc etc. Good quality puppies are also extremely hard to find and there are many 'bad' breeders out there. :( Finding a good puppy is a huge minefield and can take a long time.

My honest opinion if you have one whippet is get another whippet. They LOVE their own breed and are fabulous in pairs. My whippets are brilliant together and are terrific with any whippet they meet. Whippets are neat, clean, relatively easy to train and its not hard to find good quality in all parts of the country. I had no problem introducing a new whippet puppy - my first was delighted with her new friend. Have you thought about a full-size retired greyhound?

It is just my opinion though :D .

Hiya and thanks as that is good to know.

Yes we've had a retired greyhound... he was fantastic, Jacques was 4 when he came to live with us and lived for a further 10 years. he died last july of cancer of the spleen (we found out it is a large dog thing)... his parting was very hard on us and it took 3 months before we decided that we'd get another dog.. which we did, Sidney who is our blue brindle whippet dog :)

Thanks again :p

:D They get on great. At our house, 2 iggies and 9 whippets not sure who thinks they are what, the iggies think they are whippets or tother way round. Whichever, they all eat sleep and run yes RUN FREELY together, on the park or up and down the many hills on the reclaimed pit tip which is now a country park.

 Don't be afraid go for it you'll have the time of your life. For a good example just look up some of Zilloots contributions to the board and you'll see what I mean.

just have to say,my whippet phoebe must think she is a italian, because she will be 2 in october and she still piddles and poos, most nights.

Well Georgy is only just coming up for 4 months old  But my 4 Whippets are very good with her. They seem to understand that she is much smaller than they are & even when she is galloping past them in the garden they are surprisingly gentle with her & refrain from chasing.
