Looks very much like separation anxiety to me but I'm no expert  :wacko:   perhaps do a few searches on google on the condition (and on here) for tips on how to help him. Can be a tricky one to 'cure' and I don't think its always possible. I think a few people on here have had whippets with this problem (TC I think). If I were you I'd thoroughly research this condition and see if you think this is what it is first. Good luck with him  :luck:

does he have regular meals?

just cos you say he has wee'd and pooed lots inside, maybe try adjusting the time you feed him so he's less likely to need to go in the night. and just give him a small kong at bedtime so he isnt hungry..

kongs were our saviour when training Flo- our naughty terrier, she had 2 a day, one wen we would go out to work, and one at bedtime- both given in the crate. all treats and new toys given in crate too!

Flo used to hate the crate but now she loves it.

keep a sense of humour too- it helped me wen i was worried!

he is very car sick and wont even entertain getting in, i have to lift him in to go to the vets (only twice) and the only other experience of cars i when we fetched him the first day when he was 4 months to bring him home, his first owner had a stroke and couldnt keep him anymore, so i think the car is scary for him, i would love him to come on the school run, and down the car booty etc... i thought in the summer i might try to coax him into the car and do some short drives down the road and back see if he can get used to it.

i do leave a radio on every time i go out, and the longest i go out is on a tuesday when i run a toddler group so i go out at 8.30 am and come back at 12pm, but this is longest he is ever left and that is just once a week, rest of the time i am home mostly, just popping out to pick up kiddies.

i will go and read those links now to the SA sites. i am sure he will mellow with age, just worried about his paws getting splinters, it must hurt him

he is not a naughty dog, far from it, he is so placid with the children it is unreal, he adores them and they adore him, i just despair as he never did it before we put him in the dining room, and even then it was not this bad, thinking about it it really escalated after a thunder storm night, when he got upset and barked half the night :blink:

With regards to the car sickness I think that, for the most part, they tend to grow out of it. Our Molly was car sick all the time when she was younger and still is occasionally now, but hardly ever really. It may be worth getting him out and about in the car more often to get him used to it. Thats what we did with Molly, just a trip round the block to start with and build up the time gradually. Make it nice and comfy for him with loads of blankets (but be prepared to clean up loads of puke :x ) also try not to give him a large meal first (MORE puke to clean up :lol: ). I'm sure he'll get over it though soon.

As you say you only leave him alone at those times do you think it is possible that he is getting too attached to you? Does he follow you round all the time? If he does, perhaps it would be wise to make sure you stop him doing this. I'm not explaining myself very well :wacko: Perhaps if you take his crate training right back to the beginning, lock him in it while you are in same room, then gradually increase the time you leave him in it. Then lock him in and leave the room, gradually increasing the time. I think that is important that you can spend time in another room without him following you around, it will make him more independant and give you time to do your house work and other jobs without tripping over him every 5 mins!

I may have got the wrong end of the stick about what he's like when you are around so if I have ignore me :- " its just that Lenny can be a bit clingy if let him!

I've reread your last post and seen the bit about the thunder storm. Perhaps he associates the thunderstorm with the dining room?

try feeding him tidbits in the car then let hiim out again without even moving , when he is ok just being in the car then as jezza said just round the block and gradually extend it . i also agree they seem to get better as they get older :thumbsup:

id get your hubby to get the floor laid as soon as possible , get him back in the kitchen and go from there :thumbsup:

Sidney has trashed the kitchen door.

 

He doesn't play with anything as we leave him his box of toys and chewy things and we even got him a Kong which he played with for a few mins then hasn't touched again.... these toys are all left where I put them when we come back to find the floor covered in slobbery goo and the kitchen door and frame scratched.

 

We did buy 2 lengths of metal that makes noises when you step on them (sidney wouldn't go near them) and we placed them in front of the door... it sounds horrid but so far so good he stays away from the door :b

 

I hope you find something that workd for your little pup too

My son had a whippet who trashed doors, doorframes etc. as soon as she was left on her own - couldn't bear the family out of her sight.

When she was brought to our house, with our whippets she was no trouble at all.

She didn't improve with them until they had another dog, a retriever, no more trouble she settled beautifully.

Not that I'm suggesting you get another dog, you could have double trouble, but it worked for them.

I really do have sympathy - hope he settles soon.

right, update time

kong is working for short times like school run, i have been a bit more inventive with my fillings and it takes him a while to get them out

the nighttime problem is gone, not a whimper.

AND!!! we took him in the car to the car boot sale on sunday and he did not puke or poo or wee in the car :thumbsup: he did whine a bit and pant a lot with a bit of dribbling but he had such a nice time when we got there and was much better on the way home. he met lots of new dogs and people, he was a bit scared of the bigger dogs sniffing him but all in all it was a great morning and he slept for the rest of the day and night....he was exhausted!!

i am more sure now that we need to get another whippet for him to have a companion, i think that is the ideal solution.

i am going to get one of those balls this week that little treats drop out of when rolled around just so he has a bit of a change from the kong.

he had a very naughty chewing day yesterday though :rant: he was a devil in an angels body!!

i think that to the person that asked if he was too attached to me....yes i think he is too attached to all of us, and i feel more confident now that with time he will settle down, ..........but if not then i think open plan living is the way forward(no doors) (w00t)

we got flo a kong, and the kong treat ball- she loved it! kicked it around the kitchen like a pro!
