I am sure many of you will remember the Black Saturday bush fires in Australia.
It's been 20 months since that terrible time here. I had the opportunity to go up to Keppels Hut on the weekend to see the rebuilt hut. It's the 4th Keppels hut, I think, in the past one was lost to vandals and the others to bush fires. I've seen lots of country burnt and regenerate from fires in the past, but I've never seen anything like this. Usually a few months down the track all the trees have the downy green covering of new leaves, and we did see that in some areas
but the majority of what we saw was well and truly dead. Thankfully there was a carpet of seedlings, but all the mature trees for miles and miles were dead.
all the hills in the distance were the same, nothing but dead trees.
car park at Keppels. Green carpet of young trees but none of the mature trees survived.
I think these are sassafras trees that generally grow in rainforests. They dont look to be actually burnt as they still have all their leaves but it looks like radiant heat might have killed them.
all dead
I know in years to come the trees will come back but they will be from seedlings not these mature trees. Their days are over.
