i know this sounds really stupid but how do you die hard showing buffs get to all your shows and juggle home /work etc .Do you go in groups or on your own? sorry to ask such a silly question but being new to all this i just wondered also being quite shy i find it hard to approach people for good sound advice and was just wondering if i went to a show would people be willing to help or not sorry for such a daft question but i dont want to let my little girl down

:- " Dogs, shows, work, house, etc. Do it in that order & no problems.

Blimey, that is a question and a half (w00t) I so remember thinking all these things when I first started showing :b

As far as juggling, that can be a bit fraught at times :- " because I do different things with mine it can sometimes be a bit hard to co-ordinate, but that's mostly cos I am useless 8)

I go everywhere on my own and can have either one, two or three dogs with me depending on whether I'm off to a show, racing, lure coursing, or agility. OMG it's still sinking in that it will be four soon

Once I am there, it's like seeing all my friends. Admittedly, it wasn't like that at first. For a while I felt the odd one out, especially when I arrived with only one dog (w00t) 8) :- "

The secret it, just jump right in! I know it's hard, but look around for someone who isn't too busy and just go up to them and say hi. This probably sounds waaay too daunting, but it is the best way, believe me.

The thing with showing for me, is that I arrive really early and get all set up with my crate and get my numbers and stuff and then chill out for a while. Then I start to watch the clock and have to get the boys ready, and then I'm getting a bit nervy about going in the ring :b Then I'm in, and when I'm out I am sooooo relaxed and want to chat all day!

I can't speak for others, but basically what I am trying to say is that people in whippet showing are really friendly and will welcome new people, but are often (at times) preoccupied with focussing on getting themselves and their dogs ready. It might look like they haven't seen you, but that is because their mind is on other things.

Sooo, just check out who's doing what and then go right up and say Hi. Sometimes I found it easier to walk up and say...hey is that so and so, as I recognised their dogs from seeing pictures on here. That is a great icebreaker lol!

The best thing I ever did was be brave enough to go and say hello to Wendy (Chelynnah) she was very friendy, very helpful, and has introduced me to loads of people. I am sure there will be a 'Wendy' out there for you at your first show

Do you have any plans to go to a particular show soon? Let me know, and if I'm there I'll look out for you. I'm sure Ruso would love to give you a whippet welcome :*

I can be both a bit shy and very outgoing depending on the circumstance. I did kind of 'fade into the background' my first year of showing. Watched and listened, but was too shy to really go and meet people, but even just watching and being there I learned who people were, and there were people who would chat with me. Over time I got braver... But during the time I hung back I still learned lots.

I now kind of look for people like I was. If someone looks a bit lost or shy or out of place I will try to introduce myself and invite them to join the group I'm sitting with.

I can look a bit distracted when I'm setting up and may look right through someone so until it's all set up if you want my attention you kind of have to dance and wave your arms about in front of me ROFL! I love nothing more than to chat whippets, and I'm always happy to give a hand.

If you're going to a show either to show or spectate by all means drop me a pm and if I'm going we can catch up. I'm not sure where you are, we're on the south coast...

And I have to agree - I am so glad that TC decided to be brave and introduce herself to me that day when she'd gone to watch and learn. For me it was Juley - I was still new to showing and she had been emailing me from a list we were on, so she made sure to find me at the first show we were at together and took me under her wing...

Overall the whippet crowd is a pretty good one  , so even if you are shy there's plenty of us out there who will welcome you if you let us know who you are

I can understand how daunting it can be starting out. :sweating:

Now though i can't believe how many people i've met through showing my Whippets and that i've made some great friends along the way :huggles:

As Tracy says, this site can be a great ice breaker because you are able to know in advance some of the people who will be at a particular show and seek them out when you get there. Honestly, after a few months you won't know what you were worrying about!

Does your breeder show? That's always a great place to start for a friendly face when you begin............but in my case i got Juley & Jax  only joking, they are both great :huggles: ;)

thanks guys i will be the one standing with a fawn and white whippet looking rather lost , i havent any shows lined up yet but i have been to a few just to watch i will try to get to one before the year is out :b i do feel a bit daft going with just one whippet but who knows that might increase when i see all the gorgeous whippets and italian greyhounds  you are right its best to just talk to people i will keep my eye out for you all and come and say hi i promise

it may be helpful to find some ringcraft classes to go to before you start showing. Going to shows just to watch is a good idea. Your breeder should be also able to help you. You could arrange to meet at a show, and they could give you few pointers.

Whatever you do remember it takes a while to get the skills to show your dog effectively, and you are competing against people who have done this often for many years.

:luck: :luck: :luck:

dont feel daft only going with one whippet , i only have one to show and ive been showing 4 years lol

i find it so easy only having one to show , i dont know how some people manage to show 3 / 4  and lots of people only have one to take so dont worry about that

i still hang back and never really approach anyone , there are probably 5 or 5 people that i know well enough to go over and say hi to but im still very shy and wont push forward :b

like wendy said , let us know which shows your at and we can look out for you
