SORRY TO BE THE BEARER OF BAD TIDINGS, IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS WE HAVE HEARD OF 2 SEPERATE INCIDENTS OF KENNEL COUGH REARING IT,S NASTY HEAD AGAIN, THE PEOPLE WE'VE SPOKEN TO, DO NOT LIVE NEAR EACH OTHER, NOR HAVE THEY BEEN TO THE SAME TRACK AT THE SAME TIME. IT'S A COMPLETE MYSTERY WHERE IT HAS STEMMED FROM, ALL WE CAN ASK IS THAT EVERYBODY IS VERY VIGALENT, AND ANY TALE TALE SIGN'S, THAT IT HAS APPEARED PLEASE TAKE THE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS, IF WE ALL STAY ALERT IM SURE WE CAN KEEP THIS UNDER CONTROL BETTER THEN LAST TIME. BEARING IN MIND THERE ARE ALOT OF NEW PUPPIE'S JUST STARTING THEIR RACING CAREERS, AND IF IN ANY DOUGHT PLEASE CONTACT YOUR VET AND DON'T TAKE ANY CHANCE'S. o:)

TAKE CARE HAPPY RACING :nuke:

i have always vaccinated my dogs and have never had a dog suffer with kennel cough ...so personally.... although i realise they do not necessarily protect them 100% .. i have found them very effective

I had an open class dog that had the cough and it scarred his lung tissue according to our vet ,and he was never the same after only able to sprint 50yds before blowing up.

It's one of the problems of all of us meeting to race. I've heard of a few cases and I am thinking of having mine jabbed against it. Mine had a stomach bug after the champs so they haven't been to the club because I don't want to pass it on.I just take it that it's a hazzard of coming into contact with other dogs. I will also continue to have my dogs injected on a yearly basis because i don't wish my dogs to catch anything nasty.I think you're right to mention this problem and we all should look to keeping are dogs safe.Baring everything in mind let's all have a safe and happy racing year. Many thanks

As you know our lot went down with it - but the good news is that they have all stopped coughing now, and even Jenna the old girl has come through it ok.

As a precaution we will not be racing until the Gloucester open in another month.

In the 30+ years I've had whippets, this is the first time my dogs have had it, and I have to say it's not nearly as bad as I imagined. Apart from the disappointment of missing the Champs, only the couple of days they were coughing badly were a problem. Luckily my lot passed it to each other quite rapidly, and strangely enough Sweep who caught it first, and had anti-biotics from the vet, actually coughed for the most days. Just goes to show that we don't need to panic and rush off to the vets, as this strain was obviously viral, and not bacterial.

I agree with Hannah, I still wouldn't vaccinate my dogs against Kennel Cough, as it doesn't kill all the strains, and when I worked in practice I can remember some dogs who actually started coughing after they had the vaccine - the drug company in question actually paid for their treatment. It was a one off, but weighing things up, I think I'd rather take the chance. It's not as though it's a life threatening condition - just a bloody nuisance!

I was posting at the same time as you Longdog - I am interested in what happened to your dog. Did you run him soon after he stopped coughing? I have been warned not to let them run too soon, which is why we're taking some time out, (as well as not wanting to spread it around). Glad someone warned me.

You'll notice straight away Kim. They have a harsh hacking cough, and normally produce a clearish white froth. It doesn't even seem to start with a slight cough, the cough is harsh from the beginning. You'd think they'd swallowed something, and were trying to clear their throat. Hope you manage to avoid it.

sounds really nasty and a bit scary

i hope we dont get it as well :(

Just bumping this up .......Theres a few fellow racers who are acting correctly and WON'T be running for weeks and weeks, due to their dogs picking up the cough at the champs  ........just a shame there are youngsters amongst this group, oh and pups :( .........Glad your lot are on the mend June and :huggles: for your responsible and knowing attitude   :huggles: ......I wish they were all like you :*

Both of my racers(longtime ago) as severe allergic reaction to the kennel cough up the nose booster, both nearly died, would Never have that one again

poor old amber (conway gem) wins her maiden and then came down with kennel cough. :(

vet says it is a very mild dose, but we are out for the forseeable future.

fingers crossed for everyone else who was at andover

Oh Dave I am sorry to read this.

What a right pain KC is.

I heard Ambers gone down with it :( ..........It's a waiting game to see who from Weyhill goes down with it next  .........Get well soon Amber :flowers:

Oh Dave and Lyn, we really feel for you, and know how you must be feeling :(

I hope it goes through your dogs as quickly as it did ours (all four others had it within a week of Sweep starting). Once the second one of ours had it, I just wished the others would catch it quickly, as the sooner they get it, the sooner it's gone. I think ours was fairly mild too, but you still worry about running them too soon, and then passing it on to others.

There seems to have been dogs going down with it every week after each open - if only we could have a week with no open, and no club racing, those who have it would then know before going anywhere else.

Can you imagine our relief that we didn't go to watch at the Champs  We seem to have had the first case, although we must have got it from another dog at racing, as ours don't meet any other dogs where we live. We would have been blamed for spreading it no doubt - and although it's very unlikely that you spread it on your clothes, it is possible. I've read articles on the internet where people who have worked in kennels have taken it home to their own dogs.

Best wishes to the Conway girls from the Whiphavens - we're thinking of you, and get well soon

Oh what a shame Dave! It is such a nuisance. Hope Amber is feeling all better again soon.

Kennel Cough is a bloody nuisance. I'm actually quite glad we're not racing this weekend now. Each week we're probably all wondering wether our dogs have been unlucky enough to catch it or not. I just hope that nobody is daft enough to go back racing too soon.
