Hello I have 4 lurchers and a jack russell and currently live in Surrey. Where I live there are cows, sheep, deer and the usual foxes, rabbits and squirrels. Although I never let all of my dogs of lead at the same time my walks are nerve racking. Most of the dog owners around here have labs, golden retrievers and terriers. My dogs have been obedience trained and went to residential training a year ago to try to deter them from chasing livestock but this was not successful. Naturally I keep away from the cows and the sheep but this makes the walking areas very limited. Can anybody recommend places in the uk where lurchers can run without coming across livestock? I am prepared to move. Thank you

Sounds as though somewhere near a good beach would be ideal for you

I have plenty of livestock-free areas where I am in Devon but that would be an extreme move!! I moved here from Surrey in 1992 :D

Thanks Jinny, where abouts in Devon do you recommend?

North Devon for the beaches, although it is a long way up from the M5, or you could try the North Cornwall area - Bude is good

There are also areas of forestry all over the place - such as Halwill Junction area which is on the border of North and West Devon - no livestock other than the odd deer.

Whereabouts in Surrey are you? There is alot of commonland on the Surrey/Hants border which is ideal for dogs :)

We holiday in Suffolk, between Framlingham and the coast. The area is largely arable farms and our boys can free run with no worries. There are so many lovely walks, plus there are good beaches and wooded areas too. My dream place to move with our whippies

I live in surrey, when i had nine dogs i used to take them to winchelsea beach it is so secluded no one goes there, and you are allowed to let you dogs off on the beach all year round

Hello and thanks for all of your suggestions. I live in Coulsdon in the middle of Farthing Downs. Will post some pics of my dogs soon.

How did you manage to walk 9 dogs? Any helpful advice always welcome. Thanks again Sandie

sandie know where you are coming from be great if you could rent a good fenced in field of your own or contact some local lurcher lovers to help maybe share the cost trying to do this ourselves at the moment not that easy to find somewhere i am still looking myself but i think it would be better than having to move surely some land owner in your area could help try an ad in local farmers weekly you never know best of luck.

Hi Sandie

What about Epsom downs?- my two whippets love the race course and the downs walk. But the absolute favourite is wimbledon common.

Have just returned from a three hour walk with their mate Oscar. Despite them being sight hounds the rabbits on the common remain safe and secure in the knowledge that the three need glasses.

Hi Trev8888 and absolutely. I will look into it. Hope I'm replying correctly as I find the site a bit confusing. Thank you
