"lost" Microchip...

Hi there,

We took Wolfie and Misty to vet on Friday to have their rabies vaccination. Also asked the vet to check the microchips are in right place, well, Wolfies is not there at all...we scanned him all over the body and no sign of microchip...He has been microchipped 3 years ago as puppy...

This is all very strange as I though thsese things are suppose to last forever...

Did somebody have experience like this? Is it possible that microchip stoped working or migrated somewhere in the body that it can not be scanned...?

The vet is suggesting to input another microchip, but I am not so happy about it as I do not have trust in these things anymore...(it is also quite painful to have them injected)..

What are your thoughts?

I've never trusted these things, and have heard many stories about migration. I'm not sure where it could go in the body and not be seen??? But would be interested in the outcome. Is Wolfie a whippet, or a breed with lots of hair? I presume these chips could come out through the skin - much like other foreign bodies work their way to the surface sometimes - I was just thinking if he was furry, you might not have noticed it coming out?????

My vet told me it all depends on the quality of the chip...some of the newer ones are anti-migration slightly more expensive than others.

It is quite a simple job Im told to take them out...depending where they have gone, by a vet of course. I would ask their advice on the matter.

Hi,

Wolfie is a whippet...

I did not know that microchips can actually come out from the under the skin...gosh...but we would probably notice that as he is very smooth coated..

Who knows where is it..? will have to go back to the vet and scan him all over again...hope it is not somewhere where it can cause damage..etc..

I do not trust this things anymore - did not think until now they can fail!

Just a thought but maybe it hasn't moved but got crushed/broken some how ??? :unsure:

I know I can feel Joys just under her skin, (Divas was put in a differant place, as is normal for overseas), I am surprised that Joys is not busted by now the way she is ! (w00t)

I think I have heard somewhere that they can work their way out if they were not properly inserted. Didn't Jo on here do a microchip course? Perhaps she would know.

Anyway, if you don't trust microchips again you could always have his ear tattooed instead, worth thinking about if there is someone near to you who does it :thumbsup:

Oh I'm so sorry Wolfie :huggles: I've taken a better look now, and put my specs on 8) without them, he looked a bigger dog - hope he forgives me :huggles: and hope you manage to find the illusive chip :thumbsup:

I imported a bitch from Sweden a few years ago, we went to all the expence of getting her chipped, vaccinated and into the UK. Six months later i noticed that she was trying to lick a spot on her shoulder and constantly scratching it with her foot.

I tryed to clean it up and i noticed she was digging at the microchip, i notified our vet about it who knows im anti chipping and i was told that if the chip came out i could invalidate her pets passport as a chip is the ID for that dog and passport.

The chip did come out because Sally made sure it came out with her constant scratching of it, but it did make me wonder if i was in europe with her and it came out and we dident know, the thought of her going into quarantine for 6 months was awful.

Even tho i am anti chipping, i have done the chipping course and i do chip/tattoo my dogs, but i still prefer good old tattoo's

If any of you ever go out of the UK with your dogs please take your own scanner with as i nearly got arrested at an airport in Sweden when there cheap and nasty scanner wouldent work and i was tired and customs was giving me grief till i shut them and used my own scanner and sorted out the paper work for them!!!

it's not uncommon for the older chips to fail, they are still in the same place but they don't come up when scanned. it's more likely that it is still there but not working.

if they migrate and come out you will usually see signs of it as in scratching/cchewing and raised skin.

they do get squished etc if implanted too close to surface....my boy Badger had his chip inserted very close to surface and i can feel it easily, luckily it has not been crushed but the vet did warn us that it could get damaged when they dogs play together as it's only barely under the skin.

We had Sidney done a little under 3 years ago and we often check his as you can feel it on his shoulder... I must admit though... I haven't had Ben done yet as it was not a very nice experience

I am rather worried now... I hope you get the answers to where it had gone :huggles:

Not a bad idea to have own scanner... :thumbsup:

We are going to see different vet surgery today, apparently they have different type of scanners therefore they are hoping one of them might find the chip.

I hope they will find it, as I do not want to put Wolfie through x-rays and surgery to have it removed...! According to Defra, the old microchip must be removed before inserting another one..well, if it dos not threaten Wolfies health, I am not considering removing it at all and I will not bother with another microchip, thats for sure!...

I would never expect to have such problems with microchip...dreadful!

Hollies chip has migrated from the scruff of her neck half way down her shoulder! I have no idea if it still works. As it happens its lucky its in there at all. On the first attempt she squirmed at the critical moment, the needle went all the way through, and the vet ended up micro chipping her own thumb. (w00t)
