Lurecoursing Club In Southwest

I THINK PERHAPS THE INITIAL WAY FORWARD IS TO ORGANISE AN EVENT LATE MAY / EARLY JUNE. SEE WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE THERE IS AND TAKE THINGS FROM THERE. THE FIRST PRIORITY IS TO GET A VENUE AND BEARING IN MIND INTEREST HAS BEEN EXPRESSED BY PEOPLE FROM CORNWALL TO OXFORDSHIRE AND ALL COUNTIES IN BETWEEN I PERSONALLY WOULD PLUMP FOR SOMEWHERE IN SOMERSET(NO PRESSURE RAE) TWO OTHER PARTIES HAVE SAID THAT THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THEY CAN GET A RUNNING GROUND ONE IN DEVON THE OTHER IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE IF THE IDEA TAKES OFF THEN IT WILL BE GOOD TO BE ABLE TO MOVE AROUND THE REGION TO VARIOUS VENUES. THE NWLCC HAS OFFERED THEIR EXPERTISE TO HELP RUN AN EVENT (VALUBLE EXPERIENCE AND THE EQUIPMENT ) I'M GOING TO THE BSFA AT NEWBURY ON SUNDAY AND HOPEFULLY WILL GET IDEAS ETC THERE BUT PLEASE ANYBODY INTERESTED IN THIS GIVE US YOUR IDEAS AND OPINIONS

i'd say an open event 1st to get yourselves up and running and to test the genuine interest, then from those who attend the 1st one you can look into forming a committee and getting some guidlines/rules down on paper (if thats the way everyone wants to go)

Will see you on Sunday Larry at BSFA but we're certainly very happy to use our field for this, as long as I can get it rolled.

I agree - lets see how we go with one and decide from there.

Mark, as the expert, can you please give us an idea of what we need to think about?:

preparing the ground

having somewhere for people to park

rollers & lure

bike for re-threading

entries & draw (how many reserves do we accept?)

judge & slipper

rosettes

If we use our field there are toilets, camping and a pub all within 150 yards.

I think we should have a "small" club meeting first ......I know Chris, Jason and co can drive the lure for racing, so would just need some practice for lure coursing  ....... It should be open for ALL types of sight hounds as the more the merrier (obviously group each breed with their own type though :) ) .......

To start off I'm sure Jason (with Ice) said he has the re-thread able rollers :) ......and I'm sure there would be one or two racing clubs that might let us borrow their equipment if we asked them nicely  ...... We could possibly get in contact with Mel to see if he knows of anyone kind enough to slip and judge :- " .....and I know a very nice man who I have delt with for the past 5 odd years who does rosettes, trophies and everything  .......Then I think we need to do an open or inter club :D to raise the money ;)

Just thought perhaps an inter club would be better ......North verses South ........ but we had better be nice to Mr R as we might just need his help o:)

Speak to the BSFA, they run a circular course, the lure goes round and back to the beginning in a single loop. You need to see it work out how to run it, it makes for far more interesting coursing. The course is laid out over 250 yards and upwards, jinking like a hare. When I went up to Newbury

last year the dogs all got one go then they ran the lure the other way. Some dogs get crafty and can work out just where it is going and cut corners, they are docked points for that.

Food for thought, yes?

Please don't go too far north, I live 20 miles from the Lizard!!!!

Thanks  ....I think most of us have run at the BSFA and love it :D ..... I know some people don't like the continual loop lure system as dogs can get caught up in the line and the rollers are higher than the flatter re thread able ones  .......

I'd second that, having done both kinds I much prefer the rethreadable circuit to the continuous loop. Quite a lot of consideration needs to be given to course design, with a course that allows a number of different routes to be rethreaded between the various rounds, as the best dogs can get lure wise very quickly. Would also prefer knock-out type competitions.

What my mate Bob and his boys :huggles: (we've known him all our lives up this way and went to school with his lads :D ) .... I know Bob knows more than most have forgotten ...but his track, though perfect isn't wide enough for lure coursing and unfortunately the lure machine isn't move able  ......Though I think its already been mentioned we might ask the lovely Mel :)

I TOO HAVE A DEFINITE PREFERENCE FOR THE RETHREADABLE ROLLERS THERE IS LESS CHANCE OF INJURY AND WITH CAREFUL PREPLANNING AS ELIZABETH HAS SAID YOU CAN PLOT VARYING COURSES. THE BSFA SYSTEM WORKS WELL FOR THEM AS THEY HAVE TO COPE WITH LARGER NUMBERS (A 100+ COURSES AT THEIR OCTOBER MEETING) I WOULD ALSO BE STRONGLY IN FAVOUR OF PROPER KNOCKOUT TYPE COMPETITION WITH A SLIPPER AND JUDGE. AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED THE ORIGINAL IDEA WAS FOR A LURECOURSING CLUB FOR ALL TYPES OF SIGHTHOUND INCLUDING LURCHERS, BUT SINGLE BREED COMPETITION.I WOULD EXPECT THAT WHIPPETS AND LURCHERS WOULD MAKE UP MOST STAKES . I LACK THE KNOWLEDGE AS TO JUST HOW LARGE WE COULD GO IN ONE DAY. ( A 32 DOG STAKE FOR ONE BREED WOULD CONSIST OF OF 53 COURSES IF YOU HAD A PLATE AND PURSE AS WELL AS THE MAIN EVENT) I WOULD EXPECT TO JUST ABOUT FILL A 32 DOG STAKE FOR WHIPPETS BUT I HAVE NO IDEA HOW MANY LURCHER/SALUKI/DEERHOUD ETC PEOPLE ARE INTERESTED, WHAT DO WE DO TO START THE BALL ROLLING (I MEAN RE STAKE SIZE) ? HOW DO PEOPLE FEEL ABOUT AN ATTEMPT TO ORGANISE A MEETING OVER THE SPRING BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND 24TH - 26TH MAY AND LASTLY FOR NOW DO YOU THINK THIS CAN BE ORGANISED OVER THE INTERNET OR DOES IT NEED SOME KIND OF INAUGURAL MEETING TO ESTABLISH THE AIMS OF THE PROPOSED CLUB.

Larrue/Rae,

give me a ring any night and we can descuss the way forward for you all.

keep it simple is the best bet, i'm more than happy to bring my gear down for you to use, try and organise to have 2 bikes available for rethreading.

for the sanity of the organisers a 32 dog stake is plenty to run off in a day but with the lighter nights coming in you could get away with a 32 & a 16 but it will be hectic and battery power is a factor for a 32 dog stake we get through 3 x 110amp batterys.

give me a ring any night and we can sort the details an interclub sounds spot on

Just been reading up on this and it all sounds fab and would definitely be up for joining in whether it's run as an open or a club :D . I really enjoy the BSFA event and would love to have a go at the different knock out type competition but the main thing for me would be that Phoebs has two runs win or lose so it's worth any trip, don't know how knock outs are run being new to this but I presume this would be the case with a cons run?

I'm in Wiltshire and I see people are spread far and wide who are interested so the two ground idea (Gloucestershire/Somerset?) would be a good idea to spread the journeys

depending on the dates i'd make the trip down and support

i'd make the trip too seen as we now have a tent on wheels :D
