As you would have read on the Leigh thread yesterday we took in a little whippy girl 7mnths old who has luxating patella in both back legs, the left being much worse than the right. At the moment if she plays or runs it can come straight out on the left leg.

She will be going to the vets and we will be x raying checking and discussing treatment option but as I have no experience of it in whippets just wondered if anyone else had? I know depending on the degree that it can be treated with hydro and physio or sometimes an op. All of which im willing to consider as long as we can improve her quality of life so would be greatful for any advice on how anyone elses dogs were treated, the degree they had the condition and the outcome thanks.

Ive never heard of this in Whippets, poor little girl. Hope someone can be of help.

Just as a matter of interest has she got very straight stifles?

No experience in whippets, but my mother's Cairn had LP in both back legs. She was operated on very successfully and had full mobility and no further problems after the op.

I've just seen the picture of the little girl you have taken in on the other thread - what a gorgeous baby   How on earth could anyone want to get rid of her?

Whippet rescue got a youngster out of Leigh with exactly the same problem, it would be interesting to know if they are related. I will ask Sandra (Whippet Rescue) how things are with him.

Whippet Rescues was a 12 month old blue and white boy. He has been operated on by a Vet in the Warrington area - the good news is that he is going to be fine - the bad news......... Cost £380 per joint.

Let me know if you are interested in using the same Vet, he is apparentlyan expert with these problems.

no experience with LP but hope everything goes well for the little one :luck:

patella luxation is quite common in a lot of small breeds like yorkies, jack russells etc.a lot of the time they just leave them as the condition doesnt usually detiriorate and the dog gets used to doing a little skip every now and then.i watched the judging at a game fair recently and could tell which jacks had patella luxation as they do a little skip when walking or trotting along.once youve seen it and know what it is its really easy to spot.i didnt know whippets got it though.
