Magazine article about working Lakelands

I've never had a Fell Terrier,I've always had Borders ( better the devil you know ) but some of my mates have them.

Nothing wrong with Borders ;) Maybe you should try and experience little bit different sort of devils...they are fun to know :D
Some of mine; Brandy, lived to 14..only 'fault' was that she didn't get on with other dogs.

Amber; JRT X Working Lakeland, lived to 8 yrs old, No faults...just looooovely and fun.

Hmm...if I included Amber to the working group with her JRT addition for the mix, I should not discount my other current one  (though 'purist' would argue)
Eva, current one, Fox terrier x Working Lakeland, 7 months..

If and when I take the plunge my next one will be a running dog.

When I say running dog I mean lurcher / longdog . It's a while since I've had to train one from scratch.

Ah..do you fancy getting into racing scene or something like that?

It would be more lure coursing with some racing. I'm a big collie/greyhound fan, in the past we've had some cracking dogs, excellent workers. I've just got this itch that keeps saying to me Deerhound /Greyhound.

Lovey pictures of your dogs @Finsky.
An interesting article. The pictures in it are quite different to the Lakelands I have seen (or at least the ones I have recognised). I’ve always thought of them looking similar to Welsh terriers.
There was also a link at the top of the article to one about flat coats (my dog’s breed) so I had a good read of that too.

Well...itch is something that has to be scratched. Have one of each! :D I do see lot of greyhounds around here but rarely any deerhounds. I've only ever met few to pet and don't really know much about them..they do look interesting 'beasts' and I do have soft spot for a hairy faces. Judging by the looks doesn't really reveal much about dogs character and capabilities, but one has to start from somewhere..
I would think deerhound pups do cost fair bit?

Yeah...there is difference to the 'working' Lakelands and pedigree ones. I would say they are quite a different sort of dogs. And as it was mentioned in the article..pedigree Lakies (like with many other working breeds)are 'spoiled' by the breeding for the show standards. And now there is tendency by the breeders to breed the Lakeland into quite small end of the size scale. Working ones are little more robust and bitches are often same size than pedigree males, if not touch bigger.
I can understand that to judge similar type of dogs, having a 'standard' to which they are compared for is important. But to breed dog mainly for its looks, will deteriorate their original purposes. 'Working dogs' are meant to perform and the perfect looks is less important.
But still...shave it all the fluff away and 'naked' lakies would still be similar form and shape..pedigree or not.:D

I love deerhounds. They're big lummoxes, though, the ones I've known haven't been blessed with brains! Deerhound x greys can make for troublesome adolescents, apparently - not sure why though, as both tend to have very gentle natures.

We met a deerhound I know on a walk yesterday - a 3-year-old girl. As always, she was desperate for Jasper to play with her and though I wanted to walk & chat with her owner we had to split up because J was giving me big 'rescue me, Mum' eyes:eek:

I am so glad you said that because I thought that too and it really doesn't look like that in most of the photos. So is the rounded nose just the clipping, like in bedlingtons, @Finsky? I have to say I got quite a surprise when I first saw a beddie with a non-traditional clip!

Oh dear, poor Jasper...is this playfulness character typical to breed or is it that 'little' girl's thing?

Yeah...pedigree Lakies do have more facial hair and particularly with the show dogs, they do fluff the beard up and shape it by clipping to make the face look bit longer too.
I've never clipped my dogs coats, Amber's and Brandy's coats I stripped by hand. Iida is short coated, even her dad is pedigree pooch, but mum is working line and she inherited her mum's looks. Eva has her mum's colouring but is more of a fox type fluff. Time will tell how that will be handled..if it needs 'handling' as such.

I think it may well be - I just remembered I have a vid from a few years ago of another deerhound, a 2-year-old male, who was rather taken with Jasper. If you watch till the end you can see Jasper appealing for help again. If it had been a lab, he'd have given it a right royal telling off!

Oh wow...yours is a good size pup but that deerhound, wow..that is a big 'baby'..and so goofy! :D

I have been watching the progress of a couple of pups over the last couple of years. One is now up and running and do really well for a youngster. The other is too young yet to be ripping the ground up. Both seem nice and calm when other lurchers are bouncing around and going mad when the lure is on the move.

I do like running dogs, but my top three are Whippet, (of course), Deerhound and Saluki. The only thing that puts me off getting a Deerhound is their life expectancy, not many get into double figures.
