I have discovered the most marvellous treatment for healing stubborn superficial wounds on dogs. It is called Melladerm and is a honey based ointment with vit A and calendula and is often used to treat pressure wounds on people. It probably goes by another name in the UK. Being a paraplegic myself I have often had burn wounds and the dreaded pressure sores which take simply m-o-n-t-h-s to heal. The honey in this ointment is a natural form of debrider, i.e. it removes dead tissue WITHOUT damaging the new tissue. A friend of mine had a bitch with an open sore who was feeding pups, so she couldn't have any form of cortisone or anti-biotic. After a day or two of using this ointment the sore had virtually disappeared. I have been using it on my whippets for years and absolutely swear by it.
