My lad Jeebs has been to the vets today, he came up with what was thought to be a histiocytoma but the lump has got really aggresive and he's scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning as it's now suspected to be a Mast Cell Tumour. It may well be that it is still a histiocytoma that's broken down and got infected but as there's been no response to anti-biotics the vet feels it looks 'angry' and more likely to be a mast cell tumour.
His operation is to remove the lump and a reasonable border of skin surrounding it. The lump itself is on the outside aspect of his hock joint and as it's about 1.5cm diameter, further excision of a border on top of this is going to remove most of the skin covering his hock. The vet is opting for letting the underlying tissue to granulate along with a grafting of pig's pancreas tissue.
Obviously I'm not going to know the grade of the tumour until lab results are complete but I'm really posting to get a 'feel' of incidences of this within whippets and what treatment has been needed following initial surgery. My biggest fear being the need for further treatment, i.e. Chemo. My current feeling is that I personally couldn't put him through an aggresive treatment like Chemo due to his young age (my experiences with oral tumours being that the younger the person is, the more aggresive and likely to recur regardless of treatment) but also because he's a very sensitive dog who I (and others who know him) feel he would really struggle with this kind of treatment.
I'd really appreciate any experiences people could share, I appreciate it's early days but I want to have a plan of action in my mind that's focusing around his well being rather than being swayed by my own emotions.
Many thanks, Jac
