I am so happy for you, you must have been distraught.

The same thing happened with Toddy a few months ago after he first arrived. He pulled the flexi-lead out of my hand in fright when a big dog went for him, his fear was then aggrivated by the flexi-lead bouncing alongside him and he took off. Fortunately another dog walker managed to catch him not too far down the path and he was safe.

I never use flexi-leads now in case the same should happen again.

Give Willow a hug from us, poor felllow

jill so glad your little man is home safe and sound now for the telling off no not realy just advice i had something like you dogs spotted a cat on the otherside of a busy rd i had the same flexi leads like you andf they just pulled striaght out of my hands and how they never got hit or caused injury to someone else and they have pulled b4 and i thought this grip dont feel right so to all that use flexi leads beaware
Yes Tony I know what you mean about the flexi lead handles, being plastic they are more slippery. To be honest I rarely use the flexi lead and never use them along the street. I'm only really using them over the country park at the moment as Willow has developed a habit recently of running into nearby fields and going missing in the crops of wheat after rabbits - coming back with cuts and sore eyes! The flexi lead gave the dogs a bit of mooching space but kept them safe (or so I thought)!!!

You'd think you would be safe over a country park but a guy came round the corner with 5 small dogs all off lead and they all ran up to Willow barking and nipping at him - he is a bit of a shrinking violet anyway but this just terrified him and he was off like a rocket with one of the dogs on his tail. I've been beating myself up all morning for being a weed and not holding onto the lead better and i'm just so relieved to have him back safe and sound as I don't think i'd of ever forgiven myelf if we hadn't got him back.

Willows flexi lead is now missing anyway and Merlins is going straight in the bin!

so glad willow is back where he belongs safe and sound

so glad you have your boy back, these threads almost reduce me to tears( and I'm not a wimp)because I would positively die if one of my lads went missing.

oh thank goodness he is safe - I was reading this thread from the beginning and hardly daring to read on but praying it would end up good - this is every dog owner's nightmare I'm sure and I cannot even imagine how horrible this was for you and your poor little boy but I am sure he will be getting a few extra cuddles tonight

Oh my goodness what a stressful time you have had.

I am so pleased to hear he is back home again safe and well xxx

Glad your lad was returned to you eventually safe and sound. We live close to you and our whippets are constantly running off after rabbits and going missing for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. We are running out of places to take them in the area which are enclosed and safe. Just recently at Harold Wood Park our two ran into a field through a barbed wire fence, OH climbed over to retrieve them and the owner was walking down from his house, he said he would have to shoot them if he saw them again in his field, I don't know if he has the right to do this, we are assuming he has!

If you find a place in the future which is rabbit free, please can you let us know.

Thanks Donna.

Hi Donna, yes finding a rabbit free place is a tall order around here. The country park in question was Cely Wood in Upminster, we used to go there a lot, especially in the winter, but in the summer it has turned into a nightmare because of the amount of rabbits and the surrounding crops.

I don't know if that man does have the right to shoot but I wouldn't want to take the chance - that always goes through my mind if mine run into places they shouldn't be.

At the moment we are generally sticking to local parks where we tend to burn up their energy playing frisbee. Hornchurch Country Park is pretty rabbit free but it does tend to get busy over there.

We go on a nice walk sometimes along the River Mardyke in North Stifford, you rarely see anyone else and it's very safe with no roads - you could literally be in the middle of nowhere, you wouldn't think you were just up the road from Lakeside. I always look forward to when we go to our caravan in Suffolk as the walks are so nice there and the boys love the beach.

Hi Jill,

Sorry for late reply, have been in Scotland for a week, in fact saw your post while on holiday. We used to walk our first dog over Hornchurch Country Park many years ago because we lived across the road from it, not so busy with dog walkers then. I will ask around where the North Stifford walk is and try and find it to take the girls there for a change, OH is shouting out in the backgound to ask you if you want to meet up locally one day for a Whippet meet. We don't see many whippets where we walk the girls, although it is only used by the locals and affectionately known as the Brickfields.

On a different note, we have two neighbours who disappear off to the Suffolk coast most weekends, one of them, who also has a caravan down there, was only recently telling us how lovely it is. They go down with their Doberman dog leaving work early every Friday to, as they put it, ESCAPE!

Regards Donna.

Hi Donna

Yes that would be great to meet up, it's lovely watching whippets running together. We hardly see any round here either although I do know someone else in Rainham who has 2 and on the odd occasion we do bump into them it's so funny to watch. Merlin isn't quite as interested in other dogs, he's more obsessed with his frisbee, he will have a run but soon loses interest and wants to go back to the frisbee - Willow however is more sociable.

Just PM me when you fancy meeting and we'll arrange something.

We have just been in Suffolk this weekend, it is lovely there. Our caravan is near Southwold so you have the beaches and the forest, the boys love it and always come back exhausted.

Take care

Jill
