My boys are now going to have to wear muzzels when off the lead, they have killed rabbits etc, but the other night it was awefull, they nearly killed a cat, I was hysterical it's a good job my OH was there.

I found the owner, told them what had happend, they rescued it from under a van where it was hiding. It thought it would die there and then. They took it to the vets and it had an injection for the shock and was going back the next day for an x-ray ? broken rib.

I have said how sorry i am and I am paying the bill it is the least I can do.

I can never let this happen again, it was terrible.

I feel so ashamed :(

Hiya,You can get all sizes of muzzles from jans greyhounds, if you put that in the search bar you should be able to find it,I cant find the web address at the moment. At least you have found the owner and are doing everything you can.H

Jan's Gifts Jan's Gifts is great, we get everything from there. It tells you how to measure for a muzzle too.

Please don't feel ashamed though, you have done the right thing by finding the owner and paying for the treatment, and you are taking precautions with your dogs. :huggles: Accidents do happen though. :(

I am worried about the exact same thing - it's not anyone's fault, it's just what they do. So pleased that the cat survived and the worst thing will be paying the vet's bill.

Try Venture Coats for muzzles - that's where we got our racing muzzles from - leia has to be muzzled when off lead too :(

we went through a similar event but a cat wasnt involved,we had gone to the park, and it was busy,as i let my two off within 5 mins i had 2 squirrels and a rabbit at my feet dead, people around was not happy and i dont blame them,so we bought muzzles and millie hated hers she rubbed and rubbed her nose on the ground until blood was pouring from it,that was with a plastic muzzle,so we thought we would get a racing one to try, same happened again, she had a huge scab on the end of her nose ,so we couldnt use one again,it as left her with a big scar, and on a black dog doesnt look nice at all.

so i have 4 muzzles if anyones interested, free to a good whippet.

dont let it off the lead if u cant trust it, find a place where it dosnt have to wear a muzzle and can run free.

is this for both show and race whippets?

sorry i m just wondering if both lines are that hungri to hunt and kill?

With the best will in the world you can't ever be 100% sure that any place is safe to let the dogs off lead. We have a permit to a totally enclosed safe field, but that doesnt mean that a farm cat will never be in there.

Personally, as I know what one of mine is capable of, I would rather have her run in a muzzle than risk her getting a cat.

nabeeha - Any Whippet can be a hunter.

if its a wild cat then it might get beat up :clown:

Doubt it - not when there are 5 other dogs there too .

My own circmstance is that 1 out of our 6 is the most capable, and is most likely to ignore her recall, and given her past I'd rather not take the risk that she kills someone's pet for no good reason, and I'd rather avoid accidents. Different for everyone. Some people can live with things that I can't and vice versa.

The cat is ok, some swelling and a damaged rib, but not puncured lungs etc, is settled and recovering and we have paid the bill.

The dogs will stay on the lead or will be muzzeled, One have a field that is fenced on is meadow land it is fenced and away from house's and cats so we can let them off there, with muzzles.

In absolute honesty, I think if a dog has the urge and the ability, no matter WHAT you do, it will follow its instinct. I don't believe you can train a dog to ignore its instinct, it is absolutely ingrained. If there is any doubt AT ALL that your beloved has the ability to hunt down and kill a domestic animal, it is probably safest to muzzle or lead walk in areas of risk for all concerned.

You have done the right thing and acted responsibly by paying the vet bill and being concerned and caring about the cat, also, you are being an exceptionally responsible dog owner by taking the correct precautions to ensure the situation doesn't occur again. Good for you. Don't beat yourself up about it, it must have been distressing all round, but you have resolved the situation well.

Jo x
