Every time we go to the park, Echo does her rolling on her back in the mud. Legs in the air. Like a weird little kangaroo. She loves it.

well, ok. I wash her coat every morning. But what about when it's warmer and she isnt wearing a coat?! She wont want a bath every day! I guess it will be less muddy by then...

But I wondered about all you people, if your whippies are crazy for this writhing on the back thing? Should I be stopping her doing it? She does it a LOT.

Someone said to me "she wants her coat off" - so I took it off. but no, it wasnt that.

The park is VERY MUDDY!!!! (w00t)

what you all think?

:- " Typical kitty - my Oscar hates his coat most of the time and does exactly the same.

so unless its chukking down with rain, snowing or extremely freezing cold - I go out without the coats and make sure they sleep somewhere nice and warm when they come back in.

but he still does this without the coat too. yesterday his 'coat' was green :- "

My Binx doesn't roll in it, but he just LOVES to run through it and then he's spattered in mud (w00t) he doesn't just do this the once though, it's about 50 times!!

Chance HATES getting even her paws muddy! she's a right lady

When we get home I get a damp cloth and rub him down, so not to bath him everytime we go out, but some day's I just have to!

Just be greatful it's not 'poo' she's rolling in :x :x

Nana (white, obviously  ) plasters herself in mud twice a day every day, even with her coat on she even manages to get it underneath it. Remarkably, though she's almost always completely clean by the time she gets home (only a 5 min drive), I've never really understood this, but am very relieved.

Yes just be thankful its not poo, or Bonny used to come home green when we used to take her over the fields. (w00t)

ha ha :)

ok, thanks... it's not just my mad little kangaroo. she is the only dog in the park who I've seen doing it, so I was beginning to wonder...

It is funny isnt it, because they look so stylish with their long legs and snazzy coats and then whoosh. Scruffy Ole dog.

Yes, the wipe down with a wet cloth it will be then.

OEH, with Nana getting miraculously clean.... is you car getting miraculously dirty?! (w00t)

I would be inclined to let it dry and then use a rubber hound glove to brush it off.

My Frankie would be horrified to learn that other Whippets behave in this manner ............ he doesn't NOT do wet or muddy!!! At the end of our walk where I put them on the lead just to walk up the cul-de-sac to home he races past me and waits on the pavement!! LOL! It amuses the neighbours no end!!

It bred down too Dessie. Guy and Bean hate the wet. Walk almost on tiptoes if it's wet on the ground and that's if you can ever get them out of the door.

Whizz and Jest bounce around in mud and water they love it. I've got a new sink. It's just the right size to put a whippet in and wash them off. Easier on my back and warmer for them than the outside tap. Wye mud doesn't brush off it sets like concrete.

My Tally Lurcher is a mud hound, she gets plastered. I have never had a dog get so wet just by looking at wet grass (w00t)

She comes home covered in mud and an hour later is completely clean. Must have something to do with wiping herself up and down the settee :( Plus she sits under the heatlamp in the kitchen kennel and judging by the bedding I have put in the wash tonight from there rubs it all of in there too

All 4 of my Whippets hate the mud & wet & pick they're dainty way through to the dry :- " However they all love to roll in wet stinky fox poo :x (w00t)

Jack used to do the back scratch thing in the house trying to grab his tail, outside didnt mind running through the mud, but once he mixed with his mate the border collie he started bathing in the brook to cool down in the summer, dogs pick up habits to eh. Infact to prove a point his mate the big hairy Briard decided to follow Jack into the brook.

Now my nice clean fluffy WHITE Bichon all glistening and clean likes to find Swan Poo and roll in it!!!!! Looks like some 70's Punk with a big green strip in his hair :x

When hes just been preened now we avoid the lake route

:D

hi you are not alone our lovely phoebe (fawn)does this at every chance she gets, with or without her coat. Phoebe has progressed from horse manure to mud and also likes to eat sods of grass :)

stuhough, :) that made me laugh... Echo also eats leaves and sticks her head into bushes for no obvious reason.

sods of grass.. (w00t)

:D amber and her brother both love writhing on their backs! amber has actually fallen asleep like that  but thankfully, doesnt do it in the mud :sweating: she does it in the sun, and often wants to be let out just so she can sunbathe  nutty girl

Sam is a right terror when it comes to rolling in poo. His favourite is of the 'fox variety' - OMG I have never known such a vile stink as fox poo! :x :x

As for the mud - nah! He never rolls in mud, & even steps around puddles (let alone gooey puddles LOL)!!! (w00t)

The only time he gets muddy as such, is when he takes off on a sprint in wet mud. It just sticks to his underside, which I have to wash off - either a bath or a wet cloth.

It's funny actually, if I spot him rolling in the the fox-stuff, I threaten him with 'Do you want a BATH then?' He soon stops! (w00t)

Never seen mine do that, only if they have come across something rather smelly but not just for a back scratch.

Annie will walk around puddles when she is on the lead, but when she's off lead and sees a big muddy puddle she races through it and back again, doing that whippety loopy loo thing at 100 miles an hour.

Zebs the same. when his on his lead he misses every paddle there is, but get him in the park and he loves mud and water,(and even worse :nuke: :nuke: )

The other month i had to give him a bath, wash has coat and soak his leather coller, after one walk in the park. He's brindle but turned out a muddy brown colour after he rolled.

I'v heard that same race horses roll around afer running to cool themselves and to rub sweat off of themsleves. Sounds to me that this is what whippets ect are doing. As in the winter months were its colder Zeb doesnt do it so much.

Dont know if this is true but it works for me. :- "
