I have to brag about this here because Dragonfly (Cathie Brown) bred her mum!!
I have said on a few threads that we don't have much that corresponds to the UK's "Open Show" concept, but I would say that the show that my beloved Tabitha just won really does come closer to it than anything else I can think of. This show contains classes for Whippets from 3 months to over 10 years of age, and has classes for show/bench champions, racing champions, veterans, and altered/neutered dogs as well as the usual Open and Bred-by Exhibitor and Age Class entries.
The National is the biggest event of the year for CWA and is set up to draw dogs from the widest possible geographic area. As I was the judge for the National Meet Match Show, I wasn't able to show to myself after the racing, so I really hoped that the Annual Match the day prior to the National would be my dogs' chance to shine in the show ring!
The CWA Annual Match is held the day before the CWA National race meet. The CWA (Continental Whippet Alliance) is a racing organization which has a dual-purpose focus, and there is a match show after every meet open only to the dogs who have completed the race meet satisfactorily, and placements in that meet are used to award certain Dual-Purpose titles within the organization. The Meet Matches, therefore, are open only to dogs who are race-trained, registered with CWA (which models itself on WCRA), and complete the race meet without disqualification or being scratched from the meet by the owner.
The Annual Match is open to all comers, including dogs who are not entered in the race meet. For example, I entered my 10 year old dog who has an injury which prevents him from racing in the Senior Veteran class. So, it really does end up being the most like an Open Show of anything we have here.
This year's Annual Match drew 61+ dogs including 15 champions of the breed, plus additional dogs who have already won majors at the specialty level or other large Whippet specialty events (this could be considered equivalent to CC and RCC winners).
At the end of the judging, there was my lovely "Tabitha"--Surrey Hill Casting the Runes F.Ch. OTR CR TRP DPC (these are all titles from straight and oval (bend) racing and lure coursing), left standing all alone, to take home the lion's share of the loot!
Judge was Mary Magee, Whippet Breeder/Exhibitor and also publisher of our lone single-breed publication, Whippet Watch Magazine.
Here is Tabitha...
Tabitha is hampered by a toe injury and her racing results were somewhat less than stellar, but her 3/4 sister, Surrey Hill's Ripon Jewel, raced awesome for a yearling. Ripon Jewel is a solid blue brindle and I think if I can get a good photo of her, I'll post it. She is a very sound and speedy girl.
I know this is Whippet Showing not Pedigree Racing Board, but as the motto of CWA is "Showing What We Race, Racing What We Show", and being as how English Mabel's puppies have managed to perform creditably at both, you'll just have to put up a few racing references.
I'll always be grateful to Cathie Brown  for English Mabel, who has given me such wonderful daughters to carry on with.
