Need Urgent Advice

So sorry to hear about your devastating loss, having lost 2 lately myself I know a small part of how you must be feeling, but mine were through old age and not under such tragic circumstances.

R.I.P. little one

My beautiful whippet died on Saturday 13th Feb. We're all devastated. He began bleeding rectally day before-we took him to vet and they kept him o/night. Next day he worsened and continued to bleed. Transfusion couldn't save him. Post-mortem showed all his internal organs were healthy. Someone said he could've eaten a rodent who'd been poisoned with Warfarin but then he should've bled from all orifices not just rectall, shouldn't he? Vets are baffled and we're left with acute sadness and memories of such a lovely boy-this will take me some time to get over and no-one seems to understand and they say,"oh its just a dog" I'm sure people on this site will be more understanding. We have 2 other whipptes who are fit and healthy but I'm nervous for them in case the same fate happens to them. Anyone any ideas what caused this .
Hi

So sorry for your loss and can totally understand your concern about the future well being of your other dogs.

Was any coagulant / clotting studies performed on the dogs blood to ascertain whether it was warfarin induced? I'd of thought this would of been a routine investigation in an emergency situation such as the one you describe.

Was any toxicology screenings carried out at any time?

Has any microbiology, bacteriology and virology screenings been carried out? They should be if the vet cannot reassure you about the wellbeing of your other dogs.

Has auto-immune conditions been ruled out or suspected?

Regardless, your vet should not be 'baffled' and have some suspicians as to the cause and the location of the bleed or at least be able to conclude what it wasn't from the post mortem.

Whilst we can all speculate on here, the fact is only your vet should be able to answer your questions and if they can't you'll need a second opinion and ideally another post mortem carried out to not only reassure you but also to rule out the possibility of negligence which I would be suspecting if my vet came back with such a poor conclusion after what should of been an extensive post-mortem investigation.

Whilst none of this will bring back your dog there is the obvious concern about your other dogs and in such circumstances, being in 'limbo' is simply not good enough for you.

I'm very sorry for your loss. No animal is "just" a dog/cat/whatever animal it is; they are our companions and we love them.

so sad, what a terrible loss for you, no advice but lots of sympathy xxx

I am so sorry to hear about your beautiful whippet. A similar thing happened to my daughter's greyhound a couple of years ago. He was bleeding rectally, vet not sure what the cause was, gave him an injection (steroid) and seemed to perk up. Worsened the next day and died the on way to vets. I wondered about poisoning - I met a lady when out dog walking and she had lost two lurchers within a week with similar symptoms around the same period as our dog. She walked the dogs in the same vicinity as us. I wondered about rat poison as we live near to a hospital. I asked the local environmental health officers but was told the rat poison dosage nowadays had changed from years ago and a dog would have to eat vast quantities to kill it, so it was unlikely. Another person asked whether there could be any lead deposits in the area/around the lake we walk.. I wondered about chemicals that the farmer uses when spraying crops? we walk across farmland twice a day. I then wondered whether he had bumped himself when out walking - but he had never got to the point of being off the lead when outdoors, so that wasn't likely. To be honest though, we are as much in the dark as you are. I took another retired greyhound 18 months ago and it took me quite a while to relax and realise the same wouldn't happen to him.
