Lanny, I am so sorry about Your sad news as well

Wispa, R.I.P :( :(

It is always difficult to find any words of comfort in these situations. And even though 10 or 11 years seems to some to be a good innings, one still feels robbed when a darling, special dog leaves you at this age.

I am so sorry for both of you and there are many of us here who know exactly how you are feeling.

Go with love, Glen and Wispa

Hi all, it has begun to sink in. Sadly but inevitably. Wispa was the absolute boss of our property -- the female who ran the girl dog pack and made everything work seamlessly. You never know what you have till you have lost it and I have to tell you, that losing Wispa, head of a pack of 11 adult females, was a revelation. When she went to the vet -- and didn't come back -- suddenly no one knew the rules. Where was Wispa who set the rules? If she wasn't there -- for whatever reason -- and whippets don't have a lot of control of reason -- then who was in control of the pack? And what were / are the rules? It has taken till now for dogs like Wispa`s daughter Edith to figure out she is not there any more and attempt to assert their dominance. And along with Edith we have had Avalonia Barbados (Fox) a very strong, dominant bitch, come forward with her bossiness. A couple of the young girls -- we have three -- have expressed their immature expressions of interest but A. Barbados (call name Fox) and Wispa`s daughter Edith seem to have decided that it is a tossup for now, but one of them will in future, control the pack.

Neither girl is aggressive, so it becomes a matter of who wants it the most. My gut feeling is that Fox, who is three years younger than Edith, will win out, if for no other reason than she has those American`in your face`genes that say, what I say goes. Edith is much more in a deferrential mode, so we shall see.

It is now a week since I realized Wispa had a potentially serious problem and still enough of a short window that I am still in disbelief that she could be taken so quickly.

I urge you all to love your dogs. Love them daily and nightly and love them till it hurts. Because I swear, there is no such thing as a sure thing, and no safe respite from the unknown ravages of illnesses we know nothing about until it is far too late. If I had lived in a perfect world I would have liked to think I could have recognized subtle changes in Wispa -- enough to save her -- but after all these years with whippets I know, much as I might wish it -- that fate never deals a safe and sure hand, and nothing is for certain. I still cry nightly and I still ask why a perfect dog should have been dealt such a short and unfair hand. If I had been able to see this happening I would have done anything, and everything, to save her.

Lanny
