Hello,

I have a family of 2 young children (4 and 6), my husband and a Male 2 year old GSD. Our GSD is okay with dogs when out and about, and with our families dogs he is very good, enjoys their company ect. We have been thinking of getting a new dog for a while, as now both children are in school we think it’s a good time to get one. We have been looking at Staffies, and would probably be getting a female, as we have heard it’s better to get opposite gender dogs. Are Staffies good family dogs? Our GSD is very good with the children, although as with any dog I never trust them alone together. How much exercise do Staffies normally need? The GSD gets a 30 minute on lead walk in the morning before work, then at lunch break he gets a 20 minute walk and some short time playing, then after work he gets about 2 hours free running, and then just before sun goes down we take him out for a walk along the whole of the beach walkway (normally takes about 45 minutes) and get back when it’s dark. Weekends he gets free run through a forest for a large portion of the day, or we take him to a dog friendly national trust, where he mainly gets on lead walking but for also a large portion of the day. Obviously we won’t be walking the puppy the whole of this time until they are old enough, but will be letting them run around when the GSD gets the off lead running, and most likely bringing them along by carrying them on some walks before they are old enough to walk that far, so as they get extra socialisation, and will be carrying them along for all walks before the jabs, for socialisation. As for leaving them at work, we won’t be crate training (we didn’t with the GSD, we don’t feel the need to with the Staffy) but me and my husband can take 2 weeks off work each, so 4 weeks of us being home at all times to toilet train and get the puppy used to being left alone. Sorry for rambling, but we want to be certain that we are making the right decision. Is it better to just have one dog? Or is getting the Staffy okay?

I've been told by a behaviourist that most dogs would prefer to be single dogs, so you shouldn't get a second dog because you think it would benefit the existing dog - you get a second dog because you want it. That doesn't mean to say that you shouldn't get one of course, and plenty of dogs are more than happy to share their home with another dog.

I think Staffies are great dogs, and they are reputed to be wonderful with children (they are often referred to as 'nanny dogs'). They aren't always great with other dogs, though, but if you are intending to get a puppy then careful socialisation should mean this isn't a problem. Almost all the ones I've met have been lovely with people and good with other dogs. They seem to me to have enough confidence that they aren't made nervous by other dogs, so don't tend to be fear aggressive, but they seem to have a calmer, less feisty demeanour than other terriers. That's just my experience, though.

I'm not sure of their exercise requirements - they certainly won't need more than you're offering, and they're pretty robust so I'd imagine your current schedule would work once the dog is old enough.

When you leave the dogs, it would probably be wise to leave them in separate rooms just in case, so this is something you'd need to get them used to right from Day 1.

Are you planning on getting a pup from a breeder, or a rescue? Or would you consider an older dog from a rescue? There are so many cracking Staffs in rescues that with careful research, you could probably find one that will fit into your household straight away (personally I'd find a rescue that keeps them in foster homes rather than kennels, ideally one where there are children and other dogs). But then again, pups are almost irresistible!

There are so many staffys in rescue young ones that are desperate for a home ...most rescues would match your needs to a dog ...
Staffs are wonderful with children and like other dogs are good with other dogs if they have been socialised. ...
Rescue Remedies have some wonderful staffys in ....they rehome across the country ....
Do you think your dog would be happy with another. ..you could ask to foster a dog see how that went....

I've never encountered a problem with staffys and Dennis loves them! and like JudyN said they are classed as nanny dogs so good with children. I wouldn't trust them round other animals though like cats etc. but that shouldn't be a problem.

Lots of staffys needing to be rehomed which is sad but could be an option?

This is Dudley sharing a bed with my daughter's Staffie and two cats. Taken when Dudley was still a puppy. She also had two small children.
Diva was a rescue at 18 months old. She us now 9 and is a lovely dog
