Hi everyone just got a whippet he is 7month old and great fun but has a few nervy problems meeting people and dogs if he makes the first move he isnt to bad any suggestions will be appriciated Wellybob

Hello and welcome to k9,

sorry to hear your pup is nervous i think the best thing is if you tell visitors or anyone your meeting just to ignore him, as he gets used to people round him, i think he will grow out of it, but reccommend that you go to socialising classes/ training where he can meet other puppies to start off with and he will get more confident

hope he comes out of his shell :)

hello and welcome to the mad house :D

Hello Wellybob and welcome :)

Please put pics on, we love to see new whippets! Mine are 7 months old as well so we can compare notes. Where are you?

Hello and welcome :)

I'm sure your puppy will soon gain confidence with the right encouragement from you

:luck: :)

I agree about going to socialising classes, Bibi was nervous and the classes brought her out of herself beyond belief - give it a try they are never very expensive and its money well spent, plus you'll meet like minded people you can share tips with and go out on socilising walks - all good fun

Hello and welcome

I am quite new to the community too. I have a 7 /8 month old whippet (DOB 7th Sept 08), Toddy, that I have just taken on. I also have 3 older whippet girls. One thing I can say about Toddy, he is not nervous except with large male dogs when he was barking at them madly. I have been working on this over the last 10 days since he arrived. I introduce him to all the big softies that I know when we are out walking and let him have a couple of minutes to calm down and say hello. Same with people. Do not force the issue. Standing and talking to someone and ignoring him will probably get the better of his curiosity. I find that having a walking companion with a calm dog helps. My old Lurcher used to be scared of other dogs, people in fact just about everything. She had a really tough life in kennels before she came to me 16 years ago aged 2. it took 18 months to turn her into a happy confident dog. You do not say how long you have had him for but everything will be strange and new. It may be that he has been in kennels for several months and is not well socialized. These things often just take time. Once he is confident and trusting of you and knows that you are the boss he will feel more secure in himself. He is young. Take your time. Try to stop people from giving him unsolicited attention, ask them to ignore him but have a treat handy if he comes up to say hello to them.

Hope some of this is relevant.

Best wishes

Eve
