hi i am thinking of getting a whippet x pup,we already have a 5year old whippet dog that we`ve only had for 3months. he has free roam of the house and sleeps upstairs in spare room, we are thinking of crating the new pup at bedtime and during day when we are out. how do you think the new pup will take to this as the old dog has free roam of house or do you think the old dog would want to share the crate with him. The old dog was in a family with 3 other dogs not whippets. :)

Hi and Welcome to the forum  there has been quite a lot of threads about this lately maybe you have come across them.

I personally use a crate for my dogs when they arrive... they are a godsend.....also there is a lot of advice on using crates in FAQ if you go to that section.

Im sure your puppy will take to it fine, but I would suggest a crate of her own till she gets used to your other dog.

I love the way you've phrased that Janis - as if they just 'arrive' of their own accord without any pre-planning, nagging, begging, pleading or intervention from you

Anyway to reply on-topic I too like crates for puppies when they 'arrive' but I prefer to have the crate in our room at night to help settle the pup, and then move it after a few weeks/months when they have settled. If I were in your position I'd crate the puppy to begin with and aim to work towards having them both with free run and in the spare room as the puppy gets old enough.

As long as the pup has had the chance to go to the toilet, and had a play so that they will settle I've never had a problem with crating them. (Feeding in the crate) We still have a crate for our youngest and he loves it - he sleeps most of the night in it still even tho he has the run of the house.

I think some posts have been lost on this thread as Janimal replied last night as did I.......

There's a duplicate thread in General Whippets too  I'll merge them so it doesn't get too confusing :)
