hi my senior cocker spaniel has on a few occasions wet herself in her sleep at night. she has no idea as she is in such a deep sleep. this has only been happening at night. she is let out in the garden for lots of wee time and i have even been getting up during the night to let her out. issue is she just doesnt wake when she has these accidents and has no idea she has done it. luckily she has only had these accidents in her own bed but she has always got on my bed at night so if i need to change this too it will confuse her. she isnt loosing any urine at any other time and def not a urine infection so im guessing her age and deep sleep. could anyone who may have been through this give me any advice on what helped for your dog, routines, best waterproof bedding, medication, nappies, anything that might help. thankyou

Have,a,word with your vet, there are definitely medications that may help.

My sister-in-law's dog had the same problem when she got older, and they found nappies worked well for her. It's best to avoid nappies if you can as the humid conditions can cause urinary infections - but sometimes needs must.

As mentioned by @JoanneF .
There are medications that our vets can help our dogs with.

so took maisie to vets today she had blood and urine tests. bad news, vet says she has kidney failure. im gutted. they are trying to source a grain free renal food as maisie is allergic to grains. once we got home from appointment she picked up her toy as normal with her little tail wagging like there was nothing wrong. i wonder if anyone else has had a dog with kidney failure and is so any advice, maisie loves a soft treat but i am unsure what treats i can give her now so any advice. thanks

No advice, but I didn't want to read and run. Sending big virtual hugs.

I'm sorry to hear this, Maisiemoo :-(

Do have a look at "Millies Wolfheart for a nice Grain Free product, (it does not have RICE in it either ) as rice is also a "Grain".
They have a nice selection of meat varieties and protein levels too.

You will get some good knowledgeable information from their customer services.

Please be aware that there are very few of our vets who are qualified to give advice about our dogs nutritional requirements.
Of course the proteins in a raw meat diet are the easiest to digest and put less strain on the kidneys.

I'm so sorry to hear this also, I can't offer any advice either sadly... I know with my ferret I've kept his fluid intake up(he has cysts in his kidneys)and monitor his output in relation to it. So I would imagine it would be important for Maisie to be encouraged to drink BUT please double check with your vet though about what her fluid intake should be in relation to her condition.
'Forthglade' also do a good selection of soft bite grain free treats.

One of my dogs had kidney failure and I put him on a renal diet which he hated ...I now wish I had just let him eat what he wanted for whatever time he had left ...I dont have many regrets over my dogs but is one of the ones I have ...xx

hi all ive tried maisie on 2 renal vet foods so far royal canin and pro plan and she wont eat it, even tried mixing with some of her regular food that she loves and she wouldnt touch it. ive got 2 others to try but im not holding out hope that she will eat it. she will eat her regular food without any problems and enjoys it. today vet says i can give her a tablet called fortekor that is suppose to reduce levels or urine protein. it also says its for dogs with heart failure but my dogs heart is fine. has anyone had their dog on this medication and if so how did it go. a months supply from my vet has cost £74.00 which seems crazy. thanks

I don't know about that medication, but often you can save money by asking your vet to write a prescription (for which there will be a small charge) and ordering it from an online vet pharmacy. I hope it works well for her.
