Ella's had a pigs ear today, due to chewing for nearly an hour she is extremely tired ( as she missed out on an hours -_- ) so hasn't been quite up to her evening garden maddie.

But ,this may sound like a daft question, are they meant to eat the whole thing ?

had to wait for an opportune moment to get it out of her bed, should we be teaching her she has to hand it back at some point or is it something you leave with her 'til it's all gone ?

remember our last dog was a vicious biter (w00t) and you'd risk a limb if you tried to remove something from him.

they can eat the whole thing if you want them to. It's not going to do any harm but for a small puppy I would be chopping the ear in half until they get a big bigger.

I would be teaching her to allow you to take food from her. And once you've established that you can take it from her then I would be teaching her that the children are allowed to take it from her as well.

Hello Julie,

I think we have a new whippet queen at K9 !

Ella is very beautiful !!! I love her colouring a lot

And I'm so happy for Sophie.. when I was younger I felt just the same 'the only one without a pet in the whole world'. I got a fish instead of a dog..

Sophie is so cute. I'm sure she and Ella will be best friends.

Can't wait to see lots of pictures of both of them playing and cuddling together..

Must be wonderful :b

You must be proud, because Ella is so gorgeous !!!

Give her a big hugg from me and a lick from Dobé :huggles:

Lots of greetings

Ella is    Oh its lovely to see what joy a puppy brings to a family.

I would say a whole pig ear maybe a bit much for a young pup (she might get the squits!!) To agree with Lana, it is really good practice to get in the habit of taking their food away and then praising them and giving it back. I do it with the boys dinner bowls - nothing worse than a dog that is posessive over their food :(

Good luck with her, she really is adorable - I love that Veredon look

Yes, I can remember doing that with Josie. I'm really glad Lana and Jo reminded me as I shall want to do the same with Lola when she comes to live with us  I also used to keep a few biscuits back, and add them to the bowl by hand during the meal, so that Josie was used to my hand coming in close and either taking or giving food while she was eating

Try swapping food rather than taking food.  That way she should hand over food quite easily because she thinks a better offer is coming

Always a better idea to add the food - that way they learn that the hand coming into the bowl is a good thing
Only caught this one today. Ella is simply stunning   She looks like she has settled very nicely into your family

Hey Julie - sorry I'm only just reading this thread now. Shame as I'd have happily put your photos up for you.

You already know I think she's absolutely Beautiful!!

Hope things are still going well.

Give her a big kiss and squeeze for us.

Wendy

Thanks everyone for the lovely comments and advice, will do what you suggested with the food.

OH bought a bag of pig ears but I'm sure he made a mistake, more the size of elephants ears. Boy does she sleep well, today was the 1st morning we didn't have to peel her out of bed :)

she's got a very posh dog kennel just built (carpet and all ) and some huge doggy cushions home made too 8) (dare I say - big enough for 2 (w00t) )

will do some more pics soon
