I can think of lots of lovely girls name for our new pup which we will be excited to get in 4 weeks time but would really like to give her a non-human name. Would you be willing to share your ideas and suggestions.
I would be very grateful. She will be a mid size dog (white with a bit of black on her face and a couple of spots on her back).

How much fun is coming up with a name! My partner and I discussed a lot of names on walks before we picked up Drift...we wanted a name that resembled him and us...(we are both nomads and Drift was a stray). Maybe think of reasons why you wanted to get a puppy/dog and what it means to you/family and or where she comes from...something usually meaningful springs forth after lots of chats and suggestions. I look forward to hearing on the final decision.

Ah yes, that’s nice and probably a better idea than looking at everything from street signs to cereal packets for inspiration. I have been advised by someone not to choose a name with only one syllable because it can be confused for a command and impend training. Clearly Drift goes against this ‘rule’ as do lots of other names. I assume I shouldn’t take too much notice of this unless it obviously rhymes with sit or stay?!

Our dogs have always had human names (no idea why) but we know of a brown stabij called Oxo (brown like gravy) and one called Dublin (it was the city her owners had their honeymoon) another lady in my street always has little boomer dogs (small cross fluffy's) and they are all named after gods and holy idols..

Can I ask why non-human? It's just that when I was growing up dogs were always called non-human names like Laddie, Inky and Timber. Now dogs all seem to be Ben, Molly and Jeffrey! And I associate it with an improvement in general respect for dogs. Just my opinion. ;)

Dudley has his name from where he was born.

Quite funny when you think how many non human names are used for children these days like Paris, Brooklyn, Apple Storm, Brick, Sky etc lol...

Hiya
Thanks for all your thoughts and suggestions. The main rationale for a non-human name is because I thought it might be nice to choose something a bit different and also many of the girls names are already utilised by the many dogs in the village.
Inky and Perdy are both on my long list.
Are there any views on if a name has to be two Syllables?
Thanks again

Oh she's so cute :) What breed/cross is she?

I like the name Inca - close to Inky, but personally I prefer it.

Ah- the syllable rule! Basically I think it goes back to teams of oxen who were always called by a one and a two, such as Deft and Dauntless, so as not to confuse them; I have, usually, two dogs and try to keep to it. So we've had Ollie and Ben, Bernie and Jem in the past. (Those puppies , oh they're so :rolleyes:- and actually Inky seems just right for one!)
