just got my whippet news,whats your thoughts on

the committee and drug testing thing,i think the drug testing thing is getting a bit out of hand ie two year ban then pay the bill if you want to resume racing after the ban as ended.

is there still no one quallified to take the samples,to me it's going to end the sport we all love .

I think drug testing SHOULD be abolished till they get someone to do it who actually knows what they are doing :angry: , I think the 2 yr ban and the cost of the drug test is a bit OTT, I thought the fed should have put something in this months whippet news about keith fowlers death, as he did help run it and set it up.

Hi Neil, like you I would like to know a little bit about the running procedure of this body.The voting on and off of committee members, also a number of legal procedures! in so far as drug testing goes.  What would happen if someone were to issue legal proceedings , have they got any funds to pay out in an eventuality of this kind. As for drug testing taken on a field by a none qualified person and in a none sterile evironment they are wide open to this happening.   Would the members be happy at more money being wasted? It seems to me that this is not what a hobby is about and it is high time it ended before it ends the sport we all love. Sorry the answer to you question is not a lot! i got a bit carried away there steve

We read the whippet news today and I wanted to give up racing as we dont know what is banned and whats not. Our dogs live in the house with the family we have two kids one is just 3 years he feeds them everything my dogs are my other babies and I want them part of the family. My hubby says I have not to worrie but I am scared of the dope testing not because of what we give the dogs but what the scrounge of Gary ect. I have been racing for over 15 years and love the sport but if we did get banned we would take it on the chin but if we had to pay the test before we could race well we could not afford it and would be not be able to race anywhay. Is this the way to go I dont think so what are people who would like to start racing whippets be thinking eh. Just a thought.

hi susan i agree with you as not all of us are sure what we can

and can't use, i haven't been in the sport/hobby very long.

maybe wrong but to me there seems to be more people leaving the sport than people joining it,i too have thought about packing it in.

I also agree with you both, if drug testing is done correctly and somebody fails on something fairly sinister(anabolic steroids etc) fair enough, I would'nt want them in the sport, but to fail on something innocent which is NOT a performance enhancer is quite worrying, I like susan and john have a child (3 in april) who feeds the dogs(mainly in secret), we have told him soooo many times not to feed them, but he is only 2 so does'nt understand. Years ago(before whippets) we used to do lurcher shows+racing and it was so much fun-no bitching, no cheating it was good fun, whippet racing is going downhill. I am really hoping that john meades and his Independant WRC will give an added boost to racing.I love my dogs and I love racing, but It's the same at every open you go to-nobody is encouraging people into the sport, and since I started so many people have left .

In Scotland over the last say 5 years I can think of  only Danny and Phil haved joined whippet racing ( dem blue

& black magic) does that not tell you some thing is wrong we want more people coming in to the sport but if your scared stiff at every major race your 3 year old child has given the dogs some thing whats the point as I dont enjoy myself. We have told him not to feed the dogs but he looks on the as wee pals so what can we do. When the big races come up we have to muzzle the dogs or cage them but I hate having to do that the only one who would be ok is Robbie the fussy mutt

the irg have a life ban i to have children and my dog's live in door's . i am in the same mind as you but there were people

having champ after champ i have four dog's myself  only one open class so how can people have one after another, all my dog's good breeding. open mind.

I am fairly open minded on why certain people have champion after champion-my theories are

they are VERY lucky people

??? they get rid of a awful lot of dogs, just to get a good one. In reality it is probably :angry: or ??? .it's all well and good havingTHE best dog, but if racing carries on like this there will be nobody around to watch it

I know or have a pretty good idea as to the person or persons to whom these comments are attributed. But if you were to see how much time, effort and money they put into their dogs,if you did the same you also could have a string of champions. After almost every race it was a trip to the vets, then a trip to physiotherapist. Up and out morning, afternoon and night walking and jogging no matter what the weather, hail, rain or snow, midweek time trails . To the vets again, some £50 a week on shin beef etc. and a lot more of fish chicken liver etc. Pups run till 12month old if showing promise, if not, given away to pet homes no matter how much they had cost. Not everyone would or could afford this but if you have no children and two business's you possibly could and if you loved the sport would. I cannot see any improvment in the last year that is worth a mention on the contrary things seem to be getting worse. Possibly a change in the approach to the sport is required at a very high level. You only mend something when it is broke and sometimes you can stop it breaking, it depends how much and how far you are prepared to go and if you are ready to stand up and be counted we all know the road to #### is paved with good intentions but is that where we want to go?

I have to agree with Steve and i might as well admit that i am talking about Steve & Julie Bateson, as Steve says no-one has ever put as much hard work, time and effort into whippet racing as this couple, not only have they helped whenever they can in running opens etc an awful lot of people seem to forget that they have bred some fab dogs over the years and most people own a whippet that goes back to their breeding somewhere or other.  I don't think it's got anything to do with luck or cheating as far as steve and julie were concerned, they simply knew their stuff and knew what worked to get their dogs in tip top condition and they were always prepared  to do whatever it took to get there.

The fact that two people who put so much into the sport over such a long period of time were let walk out of the sport without so much as a mention as to the real reason in whippet news, (everyone knows the story now) but they were never allowed to have their say, just shows what a shallow lot the main racing "click" are!!!

How heartbroken must they have been to find out that years of hardwork resulted in so called friends turning their back on them and basicly saying they were cheats, i really don't blame them for walking away from it all!!

i would be really nerevous if my dogs were tested. ive never given my dogs anything illegal and all that is feed is from greyhound stores. but u wouldn't know if u were being stiched up or who handles the samples, its pathetic that i should have to worry because ive never cheated. bateson breed my cindrella and shes a good dog.also sasparella is still fast in diferent owners, they may have been stiched up. iagree that less tests should be done so the money saved can be used to do the tests properly. ???

I couldn't agree more Anthony regarding being stitched up, who's to say that the person taking the sample doesn't have a dog or friend's dog in your weight class who thinks your dog might be a threat, and tamper with your sample.

hi i think you got the wrong end of the stick

we do the trianing same as you and feed the best but we do not have acsess to top vet's and phiso's in the south dess faggin is over two and a half hour's away. i think the test have to be done . at random and at open's . but by someone not in the sport. and with a tolerance for us who no   nothing about drug's.

but i wish people would treat it as a hobby and for fun.

trianing is part of the fun.

i think to many no when testing is not being done.

and i dont know the story with steve and julie.

im not try to make enemies sorry.

Whilst i agree Denise about writing to the Whippet News there is not much point in doing so if the powers that be choose not to print it. This happened to me twice whilst reporting for the w/n.The time and effort put into writing a letter was a waste and when i had requested it to be in racers write not included in my report it left  me feeling frustrated and alienated as if there had to be no criticism directed at any one unless by a national body as in this months w/n indicates.So a good thought Denise but i feel a waste of time as i have no doubt vicky will find out if she happens to write anything of a controversial nature in her reports. AT THE END OF THE DAY THE POWERS THAT BE HAVE THE LAST SAY.

its easy to have your dogs tampered with how many of us leave them in the car with windows down,or boot open on a hot day,only takes a second to throw something in to the dogs.
