Lost a lot of photos I never got around to printing or putting on disc when last PC went belly up...for many moons meant to get around to never being in that situation again, now having a major tidy up! Know there are some wonderful photographers on K9 that's why I'm after your advice, not that my photos are all that great!

Would really welcome input on what anyone finds best to use? I have, almost 5 years worth of hounds, kids and holidays stored, would really appreciate any pointers? Looking for free storage and fast uploading.

HELP :sweating:

Most of my photos are stored on Photobucket, its free and easy to use and you can puchase upgrades too if you wish.

Ive used it for years and find it brilliant for uploading and also copying and pasting onto forums such as this one.

Also Ficker some people use too...I have an account with them too..but havnt used it much yet...still prefer Photobucket.

Yes, I have quite a lot on Photobucket and some on Flickr. But I would think the best way of storing your photos is to get an external hard drive - just so long as you remember to back your photos on to it at regular intervals! :sweating:

Good point Gillian, you do need to back your pictures

up, i lost 100's when my pc went down last year :(

Photobucket as you both said is free and easy lol

oh Yes good point Gillian, I have an external hard drive too...and 4 GB, USB sticks too ...another great way to store

and I use mine in a Digitial photo frame to show them off to my friends and family.

Thank you all so very much.

The words EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE :sweating: Do crop up a in verbal advice, while I nod and smile

Carry a memory stick around at work (while trying to remember my name or what I'm supposed to be doing there?)

Honestly folks, I am very trying!!!

Uploaded important ones to photobucket, must say it did seem to be free and easy - think we will get along just fine (w00t)

Just to put your mind at ease, Id never used an External Hard Drive before....they are really simple to use honestly

mines about 5 inches by 3 inches in size and has two USB cables which you plug straight into your laptop or PC....

you can then Go to your photos ....right click and send them to the External storage area....its so simple  Mines an 8GB one, and stores thousands of photos.

If I want to go back and look at them...I plug it back into the laptop and go through them all...and if I want it back on the laptop

I just copy and pase the particular photo to use it for whatever...then delete. Just great to know they are there safe on the harddrive.

I brought one of those external sticks, its a Lexar, did,nt cost much either(pc world) i put a load of photos on there and theres still room for a load more, woud'nt do without it now

Online, I use myphotoalbum.com. They do free accounts but I pay about $20 per year for a standard account. For that I get unlimited storage, the ability to personalise albums, copyright protection and a whole load more that makes managing my photos and sharing them a lot easier. I've used pro accounts on photobox and photobucket but they don't have anywhere near the amount of personalisation and protection that myphotoalbum has to offer.

In my experience, professional online photography websites are expensive and very limited in the amount of images you can have on show wheras the company I use offers pretty much the same kind of freedom to personalise, with no limitations or the hefty price tag.

Talked to a few I.T. folk about backing up photos and had a few PC's recovered to get old photos back. They've all said the same, that being having a portable hard drive but also backing up images on disc. I use a 1TB portable hard drive and I keep it safe as they can get damaged, I also burn them onto CD and also get small 6x4 prints done routinely. The latter I do mainly for racers who haven't got internet access but also they're that cheap to do these days and you can look through an album a lot easier than you can with a PC. This might seem a little OTT but I've been photographing the racing for about 5 years now and it's not unknown for people to ask about a photo of a dog that's either retired or deceased and their owners want some keepsakes.

ETA: The portable hard drive is brill for backing up all your other files too, I was made up when the whizzkid recovered all my old music and videos so I could bang them on it too!

Many thanks to everyone for their input, I'm quickly using up the free storage on Photobucket so am going to have a look at Wild Whippies suggestion as £20 a year is'nt too sore and you have all convinced me that external hard drives may not be as complicated as I feared, probably will go for belt and braces regarding storage

It's $20 so might be even less than that depending on exchange rate. I also forgot to mention that you get credits each year you renew and for any purchases made. I'm actually paid up for 2 years in advance thanks to redeeeming my credits!

Something like £13.50. I've got a Flickr free account at the moment and keep meaning to upgrade to Pro which is a little more expensive than myphotoalbum at £15.80 or roundabouts. Seems to do very similar things - is one better than the other do you know?
