I'm thinking about a friend for our whippet, Echo, and wondring what breeds of dogs other than MORE WHIPPETS you people would recommend.

What about a bedlington? any thoughts?

Hi,

What about a Border Terrier ? They are great little dogs and my whippy

has one for a best friend!

I'm not really up on Bedlington's but I think they can be hard work.

Good luck whatever you choose!!

Here is Whisper and Deyzi hunting together

Hi,

my Whippet + has also been a very good friend to two border terriers +. :) She also likes bedlingtons, as beddies are similar in size and also this local beddy is as timid as her. But her best friends are a smaller Border collie and a Welsh collie.

She actually gets along with most dogs, she even plays with a Pug pup! :teehee: but those mentioned above are so far the best playmates to her.

daledogs, I love dachsunds! But I hear they shouldnt jump on to the furniture because they may damage thier backs... and of course Echo is always on the sofas! Also my house has a lot of stairs, which are hard or imposible for dachsunds? or am I thinking only of the miniature type here?

Echo loves to play ball in the park, she is a great retriever. Is there a problem when you have a second dog who runs much slower?!

I was thinking of compatible energy levels... and collies are the opposite of whippies arent they? very high energy? very intelligent and demanding?

ARE bedlingtons hard work? I didnt know that. The terrier temperament, or something more specific?

Thanks for these responses and pics too are great to see.

well, my great nans dachs lived until she reached 16, and lived in a 3rd floor flat with no lifts. assie had no problems with stairs, so the sofa presented no trouble :D she was a real character and simply adored my uncles briard, who lived in the flat below, despite his much bigger size. even though she was older, she ran rings around him

lalena, was your nan's dachs a miniature or regular size? that is good news about the stairs. I'm thinking it must have been told me about the miniature ones..

Do whippets adore Bedlingtons?  Is the Pope a Catholic? (see below)

Whippets certainly seem to recognise other whippety types as their own kind, and get very excited when they meet new whippety friends. Ours has been walked every day with a black lab since they were both puppies, they should be good friends but in practice he doesn't really get on with her that well, and has become generallly indifferent to all dogs larger than himself with age. However he is over the moon when he meets any sort of toy dog, terrier or dachshund, seeing him trying to grovel submissively to impress a Yorkie or Dachsie is hilarious!

Personally I find the Bedlies we know a bit neurotic, they are terrified of all other dogs (Gelert apart) maybe it's just this pair.

I did once look into Dachshunds, as OH's aunt was interested in getting one. I remember reading somewhere on a breeder's website that most spine injuries were due to inexperienced owners holding them incorrectly, not supporting the spine properly

ha ha moriarte. lovely pic.

I love the look of beddlingtons and their fur, but I want a relaxed confident dog, if I got an aloof one, I think it'd encourage Echo to be aloof, which she inclines toward already.

I was thinking of a dog that could be on the childrens laps or even carried by them. And certainly NOT neurotic ... a little waggy one would be nice. Echo is a wonderful sofa companion, but she is quite big and couldnt fit on a lap. She looks like a kangaroo or a small horse when she is on the sofa with them. (w00t)

must do some pics.

The terrier and the whippet go together well, do they, in terms of energy levels?

I do miss having a tiny, bolshy terrier thing; mine made a whippet look like a elephant! Supposedly a Yorkie (something of which I am deeply suspcious of to this day, as the breeder kept min pins as well. The fur was definitely nearer the latter than Yorkie, her temperament was DEFINITELY not Yorkie) she was an energetic companion and match for many much larger canine playmates for most of her life.

I did look into Bedlingtons when I had problems with allergies, there seemed to be very few available. I think Sylvia went a very long way to find her two.

We have two Min Poodles as companions for our Whippets and I must say they are really great!! Not delicate at all, can handle a good bit of rough and tumble and will take any amount of exercise you throw at them or they are also happy enough too if you cant get them out for a while. They make cracking watch dogs and are very loving family companions. They are also clean, intelligent and don't cast!

Hey what more do you want in a dog!

I have a whippet and a miniature schnauzer. They get along very well. They don't exactly cuddle up together, like whippets do, but they do have their moments.

I wouldn't recommend a schnauzer if you don't like noisy dogs, as they can be extremely vocal :- "

I love having two very different dogs, and have decided to stick with a terrier type and a whippet on a permanent basis. The terriers are funloving and more interactive, and whippets are graceful, elegant, and beautiful to watch running, hunting and draped on the settee. :b

Dachsies are great (especially Max). I did think about a dachsie for a while, but needed a dog that could walk for miles over hill and dale, as I'm a keen walker. I didn't think it would cope with this with its little short legs :- "

As a family we had whippets, border collies, akitas, irish setter and a rescue greyhound, they all lived in the house and got on like a house on fire

What about a Bulldog? Mine all get on fine, Wilf Whippet gets a long walk and the three Bullies get a shorter walk each, one at a time.

she was a regular size, wire haired girl. lived for belly rubs and cats to chase

I don't really know them, but considering their build and history, couldn't a Manchester terrier be compatible with whippets? I also think whippets really prefer companions that they can chase around with. My friend has always had papillons with her whippets, and they are a good option if you want a smaller dog - generally healthy, friendly, easy-to-care-for dogs, and a lot more robust than they might appear.

Lydia on here has an MT and whippies. I had one from 4 years old and she was a brilliant dog personality wise, I imagine they would get on well.

Vicky on here has whips and a springer, they all get on well together and when we've all gone the beach, my whips have loved every moment with her springer. She's really full of fun and great company for them.

I have whippets and my OH has a husky. The husky is kennelled separately from the whips and crated separately at night.

However she has a run every afternoon in the yard with Cash (my imported whippet) and they get along very well.

I was warned off having a Husky with whippets (with no specific reasons) but she has been good so far.

I also have friends who have springers and a whippet. Another who has a labrador and whippets.

These are all bigger dogs than you are looking for though, it seems.

It can come down to individual temperaments too. I have a visiting Italian Greyhound at the moment. I have not allowed him to run free with any of my dogs ( for fear he'll get hurt and then I have to explain it to his owner) but he has been allowed near the whippets in the house, under very close supervision. Layla, Otto and Cash all take him as he comes. Dino however (now a teenage male) seems like he wants to eat him. But he has been trying to be a bossy boots with everyone lately.

My oldest whippet is snuggled up with 2 cavalier king charles spaniels as I type this!! I think Shaun (whippet) likes the warmth their coats provide in this chilly weather!!!

Our whippets also get on the very best with our bedlington and border terriers, but best of all they like each others company best......and ours of course
