We decided to holiday on Orkney this year and take the 3 younger whippets.

We had the most wonderful sunny holiday.

Toddy, Lilly and Daisy absolutely loved it and were perfect.

We stayed at Lennahowe Lodges on Loch Harray. The accommodation was fabulous.

The dogs thought I looked daft

    Just what is in there?

Fun on the Moors at Evie

Skara Brae and our local beach

    We saw lots of seals

The Orchids on Hoy were stunning

The Ring of Brodgar was just 5 minutes from our accommodation

What lovely pics and the weather looks as though it was very kind to you. Glad you and the hounds enjoyed it. My husband wants us to go Scotland or one of the islands and rent a cottage but it would have to be in the middle of nowhere (including livestock) so that we could have the dogs off lead. I notice from some of your pics that your hounds were leashed but was there plenty of places where they could run free safely?

There are quite a lot of sheep and even more cattle on Orkney and to keep them in a lot of barbed wire.

Toddy is OK with sheep if they do not run so I was always careful to let him off at least 1 field away from sheep. This worked fine but there are also a lot of hares and the barbed wire was a worry. Some areas such as the moors at Evie and the beaches do not have livestock and we found plenty of places that we could let the dogs off safely. More often than not, the leads were a precaution when we were walking near cliffs.

I would definately recommend a car for anyone going to Orkney not just for getting about but also taking the dogs to places where they could run freely. North Hoy around Rackwick seemed a good place to go with the dogs as the moors and the hills appeared not to be grazed or fenced. We only spent an afternoon there. Orkney was just fantastic and fine with the dogs if you are sensible.

Love your pics of Orkney - good to see you made it to the Tomb of the Eagles! What a place!

Your pics brought back many happy memories of a magical place and one I'd love to return to. Thanks!

We went with our whippets a couple of years ago and the dogs got such a warm welcome. They were running on a beach one day when a lady came running down the beach from her house by the shore, waving her arms and yelling. :sweating: We thought she was cross with us for letting them off but when she reached us she was being very friendly and effusive, delighted to see whippets and that she wanted to cuddle them as didn't see many on Orkney! Phew. (w00t)

    Wow, those blue skies.

Looks like a fab place to get away from it all.

I love the Scottish Islands, but have never managed to get to the Orkneys yet.

The arrangements for dogs vary depending on the route.

Aberdeen to Kirkwall is overnight and you can pay for a kennel for the dog.

We went from Scrabster near Thurso to Stromness. The trip is one and a half hours. You can either leave your dogs in your car (unattended) or

take them up to the deck outside and stay with them there which is what we did. If you are sitting on the deck with your dogs

I advise taking their coats as it can be quite chilly if the wind is strong and a blanket for them to sit on as the metal deck is hard and can get quite hot for their feet if the sun is strong.

Great pics, really enjoyed looking at them as I love to see the isolation and wide open space - we are thinking of hiring a motorhome to take the dogs somewhere just like that but perhaps not so far!
