sunday24th ferreting

me and dad went ferreting last sunday ,but we had a young helper (the farmers son) who had never been ferreting before but he went home in the first hour after we caught two in the purse nets .we carried on further round the hedge and bolted a third out of a bolthole we missed, the pups were onto it straight away and fly turned it back into ferns path and she scooped it.we had another bolt into a purse net further round the hedge then pups had a couple more runs through a small wood and just missed them.it was starting to get late so we carried on bolting for the dogs and not lay any nets and we had a big surprise from one of the warrens as two rabbits ran up the inside of a tree to the top ,the ferret carried on working the tree branches and the rabbits made a bolt for it but again the dogs couldnt make a lunge for them.we tried a further warren and the ferret was staying at 4ft inside a hedge,so we slowly started to dig into the night so dad collected the lamp from the car and after 20mins we broke through to the ferret who had been feasting on a some young.to end the night we lamped a couple of fields and fern put another rabbit in the bag.

we have ferreted this warren on three occasions and each time drew a blank.

monday 25th lamping

the weather was near on perfect ,a little drizzle and high winds aswell as a carpet of cloud to block out the moon.but the only way onto our permision had the wind blowing our sent towards were the rabbits are normally feeding .so we had to walk for a good 30 minutes then turn back lamping the fields we had previously walked to get the wind towards us and away from the rabbits .straight away we noticed a squatting rabbit, 'fern was slipped and she put in a few good turns keeping it from going into some trees, just missed a couple of strikes but the rabbit ran towards us with fern very close behind .the rabbit came to close to fly and with a good stretch whilst still on her slip 'fly' snatched the bunny up . we went on to miss a couple more rabbits ,far slipps really but sometimes they turn out into good chances.the next chance was another long slip on a sqautting rabbit ,fly was slipped and as she coursed this rabbit for a little ,another rabbit got up so fern was slipped but this one beat her to a hedge through a fence, fly had also lost hers but on her way back another rabbit made a run for it but fly made little work of this one and picked it up .fly went a caught her third rabbit on a rape field, this one didnt obviously know fly has got racing champion blood in her make up as it tried to out run her accross the field but was quickly stopped .the next run was fern chance to burn of some energy ,a long slip on a rabbit which was already on its way home running away from us but fern quickly scared this rabbit to run back into the field where she scooped it up.the next run she made look even easier and bagged our last rabbit of the night.5 rabbits in total ,the landowner will be pleased.10 rabbits in two days of his land.

friday 29th lamping

lamping again in perfect conditions ,strong winds, rain ,warm and the darkest its been for a few weeks but sadley a shortage of rabbits .fern caught all three rabbits from four runs and fly had two runs but missed both times. the last rabbit fern caught she had took it with so much speed she ended up in a lake with the rabbit but left the rabbit swimming whilst she jumped back out so i sent in the lab as she loves the water to retrieve the swimming bunny lol . we have had about 70 rabbits from this spot in the last eight weeks ferreting and lamping and it seems to have put a dent in the population.last spring and summer you were falling over rabbits on this spot and we thought we would have a few hundred to go at this season but with mixy rearing its ugly head for what seemed forever sadley its not to be.hopefully it will recover this year for a better season .
