Hi

thought some of you might like to know how little butterball Parker is getting on. (w00t)

as it happens he isn't doing very well at all at the moment and i have had a chat with the vet about putting Parker to sleep.

Parker has been having fits for a little while and he was put on potassium bromide along with his phenobarb. he couldn't have the loading dose of KBr because his liver is compromised so we have been waiting for the KBr tablets to kick in.

however, since he started the new tablets he has gone down hill quite a bit.

He has been having cluster seizures and basically twitching and trembling continuously,he has also been falling over and stumbling and occasionally standing on the tops of his feet rather than the pads. the vet said this was because his brain wasn't recognizing where his feet are.

as a result of this he has just had seven days dosed up with Diazepam to try and sedate him and break the habit of the seizures. sadly the Diazepam had little effect and mostly made him fall over even more. he finished the course last Friday but continues to twitch and tremble and stumble( having said this he does still love a run and plays normally, if a bit clumsily).

The other problems we have are that the constant cluster fits affect his behaviour and he is constantly throwing himself at the kitchen units and pressing his face on the fridge whining for food...he keeps this up for hours...he also constantly drinks the water bowls dry as tho he doesn't know when he's had enough...he then spends so much time needing a wee it's awful for him ie he's after food/drinking loads/weeing lots/after food/thirsty/weeing etc etc.

i will be seeing the vets tomorrow and will be asking where we go from here but at the moment if things haven't improved by mid january, by which time the KBr should have been well and trully working,Parker will be PTS as it just isn't a good quality of life for him...i cannot imagine the poor lad feeling like this for the next five years.

i kind of hope the vets want to sedate him for longer this time because the fitting really needs to stop completely for a while.

sending him and you some hugs :huggles: , hope you can get his fits under control :luck:

Was only thinking about Parker this morning, sorry he's not good, must be heart-breaking to see him like this, I hope things do settle down for him again so he can regain his quality of life again :huggles: :huggles: :huggles:

Thanks Sal and Meddling

it's looking a lot bleaker than before and to be honest i've resigned myself to the fact that it's likely just never going to work out for the little man.

we came very close to sending him to heaven recently when this all started again because it must be really horrid feeling the way he does and it's heart breaking to watch.

I have the support of a brilliant vet who i trust completely and i have told him not under any circumstances to allow me to keep Parker going unless it's totally in Parkers best interests.

Oh bless her heart...was wondering about her too, but assumed the old git was tough as old boots and quite capable of recovering from eating the forth road bridge if needs be

on a brighter note ,glad to hear moonpigs doing good after she got the lino out of her system :p :huggles:

Poor Parker, you will know if his life is more pain than gain. Wishing you luck with him, I often think about his sweet little face, he is such a sweetie

Poor Parker, here's praying for a miracle, glad you've got a good vet you trust, lots of :huggles: to you both

FINGERS CROSSED FOR PARKER, HOPE HE DOES IMPROVE. THE PRESSING HIS HEAD AGAINST THINGS SOUNDS LIKE A SIDE EFFECT TO A LIVER SHUNT DONT KNOW IF IT COULD BE? THESE CAN BE KEPT UNDER CONTROL TO A DEGREE WITH A NONE PROTIEN DIET ITS JUST A THOUGHT .

hi

Parker has problems with bile acids and he has been on prescription hepatic diet for two years. he has a congenital liver disease and unfortunately it is the part that gets damaged by epilepsy drugs in the end as well.

anyway i was working at the surgery yesterday and we've now got him back on Diazepam this time a higher dose and for two weeks instead of one, so hopefully he will stop the trembling and twitching soon. Last night he was standing still and he suddenly just fell over like a felled tree (w00t) we think it was the diazepam kicking in (w00t) we hope so.

thanks for all the good wishes.

Poor Parker :huggles: - you are doing everything you can for him, and it sounds like you have a wonderful vet.

Poor Parker - it must be very hard to see him so poorly. I do hope there's a significant improvement soon. :luck: :luck: :luck: :huggles:

Glad to hear that MoonPig has recovered from her latest adventure though
