Hi
thought some of you might like to know how little butterball Parker is getting on. (w00t)
as it happens he isn't doing very well at all at the moment and i have had a chat with the vet about putting Parker to sleep.
Parker has been having fits for a little while and he was put on potassium bromide along with his phenobarb. he couldn't have the loading dose of KBr because his liver is compromised so we have been waiting for the KBr tablets to kick in.
however, since he started the new tablets he has gone down hill quite a bit.
He has been having cluster seizures and basically twitching and trembling continuously,he has also been falling over and stumbling and occasionally standing on the tops of his feet rather than the pads. the vet said this was because his brain wasn't recognizing where his feet are.
as a result of this he has just had seven days dosed up with Diazepam to try and sedate him and break the habit of the seizures. sadly the Diazepam had little effect and mostly made him fall over even more. he finished the course last Friday but continues to twitch and tremble and stumble( having said this he does still love a run and plays normally, if a bit clumsily).
The other problems we have are that the constant cluster fits affect his behaviour and he is constantly throwing himself at the kitchen units and pressing his face on the fridge whining for food...he keeps this up for hours...he also constantly drinks the water bowls dry as tho he doesn't know when he's had enough...he then spends so much time needing a wee it's awful for him ie he's after food/drinking loads/weeing lots/after food/thirsty/weeing etc etc.
i will be seeing the vets tomorrow and will be asking where we go from here but at the moment if things haven't improved by mid january, by which time the KBr should have been well and trully working,Parker will be PTS as it just isn't a good quality of life for him...i cannot imagine the poor lad feeling like this for the next five years.
i kind of hope the vets want to sedate him for longer this time because the fitting really needs to stop completely for a while.
