Hi all

I am new to the forum but have 3 whippet girls and sadly lost my dog to a saddle thrombus earlier ths year.

I have kept rescue whippets, a lurcher and a greyhound over the years, Many have had bad teeth being older when they were adopted. I have tried most things including Dentastix. Nothing was very effective although I tended to stick with hide chews twice a week.. Last October, my vet put me on to Hills T/D . My whippets get 3 for breakfast and 2 at bedtime instead of their 'Shapes'. I cannot believe the improvement. Even the old girls teeth are looking good. This is supposed to be a complete food but they are quite fattening. I find that using them as treats / snacks works fine. They are twice the price of the 'Shapes' but less expensive than dentastix which always vanish from view in seconds. I would be wary of feeding these as a complete meal, 1. because they are fattening but also because some whippets seem sensitive to high fat diets.

Hope this helps

Best wishes

Eve

supermarket own brand, indeed half the price and am not supporting a company that tests on animals.
Do Pedigree not manufacture for supermarkets? I agree about their ethics though!
not sure I understand what you mean
Supermarkets don't manufacture their own brands.

Major manufacturers like Pedigree don't just make their own products, the big ones also produce supermarkets' "own label" brands - cheaper and made to their own specification. The supermarket will state that the quality of the ingredients are to be inferior to reflect the price so that their margins are maintained.

It is possible that by buying "own brand" you end up with an inferior product made by the very manufacturer you are avoiding!
i see, well most supermarkets are against animal testing nowadays, but i will look into it.

though i can't imagine any other ingridients that could be even more inferior than pedigree! what do they put in there - cotton wool? :D

I don't buy them unless we win them at family dogs shows etc,i perfer to give them bones from the butchers as they last a lot longer and better at cleaning their teeth

i find it really hard to find good, big bones that i'm not afraid the dogs will choke on. they do get tripe and some other bits of raw meat. ought to get them used to having their teeth brushed.

anyhoo, they only get dental chews possibly once every three months.

i agree a good meaty bone will keep their teeth clean i have never used them after the first attempt of giving the girls one as they went all sticky and slimy :x

I bought them for Megan and she drank like a fish :( She ended up weeing that much that I thought she had a urine infection  I took her to the vet and explained she was weeing all the time and they tested her urine and said there was no infection and when I explained she had been eating those denta sticks and thirsty, he told me it was the cereal base giving her a terrible thirst, so I never gave her any again :b Those Pedigree rasp things to the same to her . I buy her those Greenies now instead they come in sticks and toothbrush shapes and different sizes
