I've bought Bluebell a big box of Dentasticks, but gave her the first one this morning and although she is not a gannet at all, ended up choking a bit on the end of it.

Now her throat appears to be scratched as she is gagging when she ate a biscuit and coughing just a little...

...anyone else had a problem with them?

She had no sign of a cough or irritation before hand

Poor Bluebell hope she feels better soon :huggles: Penny gets the small denta sticks regularly and loves them, we have never had any problems with them.

My four dogs have one a day,i have never had a problem.Perhaps if they try to eat them too quickly, they can cause an irritated throat,as they are hard and the shape.I also buy Tesco own brand dental chews, half the price!!

I never give mine Dentastix - they always seem to get them stuck on their teeth! I got PAH ones and they're a different consistency - harder and not so sticky. Jonah loves them but Muffin's always really fussy with his treats! :-

i have bought them in the past, I find that it makes their poo a bit funny. now all the treats i buy (unless splashing out on some fish4dogs) are supermarket own brand, indeed half the price and am not supporting a company that tests on animals.

Do Pedigree not manufacture for supermarkets? I agree about their ethics though!

not sure I understand what you mean  it obviously is sold at supermarkets but at least by not picking it up I don't support the company, say if the whole wide world stopped buying said pedigree products a supermarket would not stock it or the quantity would at least reduce, not that it's going to happen. talking about ethics I have now switched to superdrug own brand body/face stuff, it's vegetarian/vegan and they are against animal testing as well as sponsoring research into alternatives. costs fraction of the price of having Penelope Cruz swear by using Loreal o:) :))

My boys have the medium ones every now and again if I can't get their chewy ones

Not with the whippets clair but yes have had this with the gsds when they have the ones that are too small for them - wel always give the whippets the gsd sized ones now as our one gsd made herself sick with one too small :( Also had a similar problem with the jumbo bones if they are too small.

A bit of honey - if bluebell will have it will help to sooth the throat .

My girls haven't had any problems with them Clair.

Maybe Bluebell had a bit go down the wrong hole

I used to use them with no problems. I now seem to have gone the route of harder chews for some reason. They last a lot longer and still keep their teeth clean.

my dogs have them all the time and have done for years...we haven't had any problems at all and I much prefer them to the raw hide treats you can buy.

The only thing is we have to break Woodys dentastick into bits because he doesn't do big food lol he's a bit special when it comes to bite size pieces of everything

Not criticising dentastix or anything but when I was purchasing them I did wonder how they worked. All my dogs devoured them in seconds, so there was not benefit gained from chewing as you would get on a bone. Any answers appreciated.

My dogs just like the taste to be honest, I use tooth paste and a tooth brush to keep their teeth clean and just regard dentastix as a treat they enjoy.

Supermarkets don't manufacture their own brands.

Major manufacturers like Pedigree don't just make their own products, the big ones also produce supermarkets' "own label" brands - cheaper and made to their own specification. The supermarket will state that the quality of the ingredients are to be inferior to reflect the price so that their margins are maintained.

It is possible that by buying "own brand" you end up with an inferior product made by the very manufacturer you are avoiding!

I've seen those in the supermarkets but never bought them.

I prefer to give mine fresh bones or a pig's ear/tripe stick for a treat.

I keep a regular check on their teeth and, so far, they still have perfect pearly whites :D

I'll bring Bluebell a fresh bone on Wednesday  :*

Mine love tripe sticks and pigs ears also. Their favourite, by far has got to be a cows ear.
