Evie's peeing is ruining our small lawn and wondered if there is a solution. Have considered replacing with AstroTurf - and would be grateful to hear of anyone's experience of this. Thanks.

1st suggestion - wash it in immediately, on the spot.
turn on the hosepipe, & water it into the soil to dilute it.
2nd - use these:

The rocks in the bag are rinsed, & put into the dog's water bowl; top-up the water level every night, B4 U go to bed. When U go for a long walk, fill a bottle with water from this bowl, to take along. Every 8-weeks, swap the rocks for new, rinsed rocks.
Don't feed the dog a lot of raw meat - that increases the NITRATES excreted in the dog's urine, which will increase the "burning power" of the dog's urine.

I know a few people who have replaced their lawn with Astroturf and are delighted with the results. Several of these are lurcher owners whose dogs use the lawn as a racetrack so they can certainly stand up to a lot of wear and tear.
They do come in a range of qualities though, and I assume the cheaper ones may not be so robust.
I'm not an Astroturf person myself - it's too artificial and I like a natural garden even if that does mean my lawn is a mess - but that's just a personal thing.

I have artificial grass and it’s the best decision we ever made. Misty is happy with it and has never tried to dig it up like she does with real grass. If there’s a messy mark after number twos then a quick rinse with the hosepipe and all’s back to good.

We got artificial grass and its amazing. But its really funny when everyone else is out mowing the lawn and I'm out hovering it. Both dogs don't mind it they will wee on that anytime, but my dogs hate weeing on pavements/hard flooring. So its a pain in the bum when Olive drags me onto someone's garden to do her business .
You could buy a square piece of astro-turf/fake grass, then teach her to wee on that rather than on the lawn.

Thank you everyone for your advice. That's really helpful. It's good to hear that AstroTurf seems to work well. I still need to get my head round having an artificial lawn but our current lawn does look a mess. I know I could follow her around with a hose and wash it away every time she pees but I really don't have the energy or the inclination for that!

We have artificial grass it was very expensive but the best money we have ever spent ...with 3 lurchers and 2 jrts. ..i hose down and disenfect every morning. ..
This is what I'm thinking of. What about poos. Does it stain the grass?

We’ve had our artificial grass for two and a half years and there are no stains on it. We just hose it down if she makes a mess. Money well spent.

No if poo leaves any marks even dried on it just hoses straight off ...we ordered ours via online we had some samples sent and choose the 2nd most expensive ...it has different colours in so looks like real grass ...no muddy feet in the winter...amazing !!!
Our has been down 3 years and still looks as good as new. ..i brush it daily as we have a sycamore tree in the garden and i hoover it once a month with henry hoover

I understand why people with busy lives need a no-fuss garden but I just couldn't stand no grass. (Please understand our garden will not be in the running for a gold medal at Chelsea again next year! It has excavations, and trampling as standard). But I'd really miss the bees and butterflies and birds. A robin has raised its family on worms caught from our lawn! Its chicks are out there now. Ridiculously proud! And what would the hedgehog eat?

I feel very much like you, @merlina, To me, it's a step on the way to filling your borders with plastic flowers, in the process exterminating many forms of life or depriving them of any food or habitat (not that I'm saying that anyone here would do that). But it's a personal thing as well and particularly for people with a smaller garden who don't want it to be a mudbath, but want to be able to enjoy it and not have their dogs drag mud in several times a day, I can see it makes sense.
I have friends with two labs, an absolutely stunning garden with deep borders, and very expensive fake grass. It looks fantastic and it was the right decision for them, but my heart was screaming, 'Nooo, it's all wrong!' Mind you, I feel the same about gardens with trompe l'oeil murals on walls and other forms of artifice.

I think anyone that has seen my ‘before’ photos will understand why we went for artificial . Misty is so full of energy that she runs around the garden every day all year round, so this was a godsend to the mud that was walked through the house.
We still get a huge variety of birds in the garden due to having feeders and bird baths. We still have trees and flowers so still get the bees, butterflies, ladybirds etc. We used to have a hedgehog that visited our garden every night until we got a dog, then it stopped coming that was long before the change of grass.
I would never had considered getting rid of the grass if we didn’t have a dog, but for our small garden it is so practical and been the best decision for us.

My grass was really suffering with this problem and I also considered artificial grass. I then saw an advert in a magazine for Dog Rocks so thought I would give them a try before considering artificial grass. I have used dog rocks for the last 4 months with great success! My lawn looks great now.

You add these to the dog's water don't you? I'm a bit unsure about having my dog ingest something that changes the composition of his urine that much.
