As far as the lurcher goes  do not people realise they cannot expect someone else to take over a responsibility of this dog???!!! It is sad but if he was mine i would have him pts. That is the responsible thing to do with a dog that already seriously injured a person, and by the sound of it, several dogs, and you can never be sure what they are not saying.

Sorry, but just have to respond to that last post to say that is a gross generalisation about rescue dogs.
I have at the moment a greyhound (ex racer) and three 'strays', a saluki lurcher, a whippet x and an elderly collie x, all rescues and all the friendliest, nicest natured dogs you could wish for.

Yes, it sounds as though this dog has severe problems, and I guess it must be in doubt whether he can safely be rehomed.  But please don't extend this to rescues in general - most of them are there because people are stupid and irresponsible, not because there is anything 'wrong' with the dogs.

I have been working with recues sighthounds for over 10 years i have foster well over 60 in my own home so I think I know what i am talking about. sighthounds an a very loving gental loyal breed but if one turnes you know about it

Its quite ironic actually  old hands on here may remember Leon was attacked when he was a tiny pup  and hurt quite badly :(

Guess who it was ? (w00t)

Cheers

Steve

Poor pico, i cant believe these people got you to look at there dog under false pretenses knowing what had happened, can you imagine if you had turned up with a child if it needs 25 stitches in an adults face.

and you'll still get somebody who thinks it should be given a chance? to those people I say go and get it and let us know how you get on with it.

Poor boy , its made quite a mess , Im sure it will heal well and not look to bad in the end , One of my cats came home with half an ear missing once , never did find out how it happened , but it gave him` character `

Those people should be shot too , imagine if you taken the dog and rehomed him (w00t) Goodness knows what he could have done if given the chance  Only one solution for him Im afraid :(

Looks we are all posting in the same time. When i started there was no talk about pts. And of-course there are many rescue dogs which deserve a second chance, but the problem is that you just do not know what has happened for a dog to be dumped. When i was a child we had a rescue dog, he was great most of the time, very well trained to a high obedience training (like responding to hand signals), but every now and then he would crawl under the table and growl and go for anybody who tried to go near him. We had him until he died at very old age, just ignoring him during his "moods'., and he never actually bit anybody, except the man who bothered me when i took the dog out for walk one night - but that is another story. But ihis behaviour was rather frightening, and it only became obvious several months after we got him

Mmmm - this boy has had all his chances I think. It is a difficult thing to have a dog put down, but I think here it's the safest thing for all involved and for anyone who could possibly be involved in the future. He's a bit of a loose canon by the sounds of it - and a gentle green dream goodbye would be best IMO.

Shotguns not required.

I bet it's previous owners knew about his mood swings?.

I do agree there are many rescues dogs out there that would make good pets (In the right homes) but there are also many like the own in your own account which the new owners dont know 100% what they are getting themselves into.

When picos ready to be cleand up a salution of salt water and cotton wool will take the bleed out of his fur its hard to shit with him being so light coated but salt water works just buy gentaly wiping and he wont look have as bad when its cleand up

I am sure that is why he was in the pound. He was a beautiful purebred Irish Setter, and he was trained in such a way that i could sit him in front of his favorite food and say "stay", and leave him for hours, even go out of the house and he would not move. Ten years old can be rather cruel (I am ashamed of that). I could say "go" and he would go in the direction i pointed, he would only stop when was told to stop, and he would obey any command at any distance, provided he could hear or see me. And he obviously had some shutzhund training as he went for that drunk who threatened me with a bottle, fortunately it was in the winter in Europe and the man was wearing very thick padded coat, which got torn badly (right arm sleeve).

Poor Pico  Our cat lost the same bit of her ear to a tomcat bite, it bled profusely turning the bedroom into a horror film set, but it did heal quite quickly without any treatment. Sounds as if he got off lightly in some ways, when a bad lurcher went for ours it went straight for the jugular (was I glad he'd just moved onto his fishtail collar, which was bitten through!).

I don't suppose the nice people offered to pay the vet's bill, for your trouble? :- " Our neighbours paid the £400 vet's bill when their staffie x tore another dog's ear off.

Poor Picco....I'm sure his ear will look better once healed and the fur has grown a bit. :(

I can understand why you are angry....especially as whippets have long memories and will probably be afraid of all similar looking dogs in future.

Oh Steve, Poor poor Pico (I have such a soft spot for him :b )

What an awful ordeal, and I hope that both you and he feel better soon. The physical wound should heal quite quickly a least.

Please send him a cuddle from me (just been looking at him enjoying a run on WW)

Tracy

:( oh no... poor Picco :( that looks painful, and he looks so sad. Hope he's feeling better soon. Steve, you do seem to have bad luck where your poor dogs are concerned, if it's not Picco then it's Leon being stolen... I do hope your luck turns :luck:

Love to Picco, Leon and Teasel. What a shock for you all when you were trying to do someone a favour!
