As I indicated a little while ago I'm going to make some changes to the way attachments to posts are stored.

Since the start of K9 there has been no restriction on the amount of space used by members attachments. The attachment size for each post has been limited but never the overall space. This has resulted in a very large store of old pictures etc. that has now become impossible to effectively manage.

So the new settings will give every user a 5Mb global limit of stored attachments. To offset this I've already increased the maximum attachments per post from 75Kb to 300Kb. Once I make the change everyone's existing attachments come under this control.

If you have less than 5Mb of stored attachments there will be no immediate difference - you will get the opportunity to delete old attachments and manage your attachments but you will see no difference until you have a total of 5Mb stored. However, if you already have more than 5Mb of stored attachments you will not be able to add any further attachments until you have removed old attachments and brought your global attachments to under 5Mb.

Hope that makes sense  I expect it will all become clear once I make the change. This functionality has been available in the software for a while but it's untested on K9 & I cannot really test it without actually making the change... so I expect there will be a few problems.

I'll make the change in a few days.

OK Nigel. Message understood  Good luck

Sorry to bother you Nigel, but could you tell me where you find out how much space you have used please?

I've now implemented the 5Mb global limit for attachments.

Let me know if you have any problems... I know you will.

That's, I know you will let me know if you have any problems, not I know you will have problems :sweating:

You can check on used space by going to your 'My Controls' & then clicking on 'Manage my attachments' under options on the left hand side.

When you post pictures from photobucket or the like, does that take up memory please?

I dont know about anyone else. but i just joined yesterday and have no attatchments yet and i still cant upload from photobucket. i resized smaller on the photo and when i copy and paste, it just says uploading photo. it hasnt actually uploaded anything yet. am i doing something wrong?

If you have pictures saved on photbucket (or anywhere else for that matter) you don't have to upload them here.

Could someone who uses photobucket possibly write down the steps required & I'll try & add it to the help files?

Hi Nigel, I don't suppose you could be a little more generous with the size allowance of the photos please?

I really hate seeing all these re-sized photos...they look awful (even if you can click on them to see the full size)? I know you increased it slightly a month or two back, but most peoples photos still exceed the size limit.

It's not a question of file size it's the physical size - width & height. Larger pictures have to be physically resized so that they fit on the screen without breaking the screen layout. What is set at the moment is about the best compromise.

Yes...I did mean increasing the allowance for the width and height of the photo. :) Oh well....I thought it was worth asking. I wonder if allowing just a teeny bit more would stop a lot of photos being reduced by tiny amounts like 5%, and spoiling the whole photo.
