I know that a number of people have their dogs muzzled when they free run them. This is a truly horrible story. I can't imagine what the dog went through.

This is not me slagging off her owners because they must be in a terrible state but I'd hate for another dog to die like this. So if you free run your dogs with a muzzle on then make sure it's somewhere that the dog can't get lost from and if in doubt keep the dog on a lead.

Went missing from: Croydon, Surrey (Addington Hills area) on 18/2/07

Circumstance of loss: Disappeared whilst on a walk in Addington Hills area (known locally as Shirley Hills), wearing a coat and muzzle.

She was found in a very weak state, still wearing her muzzle and died shortly afterwards

I've often wondered whether this sort of situation could arise, and that a muzzled dog that's lost would not being able to forage what a sad story :'(

I've heard of atleast one rescue advising owners to free run a sighthound only when wearing a muzzle - danger to smaller dogs/cats etc.

I'd not free run mine in a muzzle if we were out walking as they could get snagged and if it came to it they couldn't defend themselves either.

Most say dont let your dog off lead at all till its setteld with you and then only in a very secure place. no new dog should be off lead for the first few months.

I personaly have a dog I cant let off lead with non sighthounds and when he goes off with some of mine he nips but can injure the others if he is off hes muzzled but the places hes goes off lead in he carnt get out of.

Good point. I only asked as a woman has started walking a re-homed greyhound with a muzzle on (the dog, not her!) and she told me the rescue said keep a muzzle on it at all times!
