Hi, I've had my greyhound 3 weeks now and over the last few days she's started whining whenever we leave her, even if it's only for 5 minutes, and she chews everything...ie the doors, sofa arms, anything wooden in particular. It's really getting me down and my parents, are furious, and we just don't know what to do. I thought it might be separation anxiety, if so how can I help her?

I'm going to put on her muzzle when we next go out, she'll probably still whine but at least she can't chew. She's been so good up until now and she's a lovely girl, please help me!

is she a young dog..? a resue..? maybe shes been left in bad conditions before and has a fear of a repitition. interested to hear more.

first of buy a crate will save your stuff getting wrecked .best thing i ever done was invest in my two .this is what my two used to get upto when we went out ........

only cost 40pnd a crate well worth it :thumbsup:

also try leaving telly or radio on hope this helps

THOSE PHOTOS BRING BACK MEMORIES..

ROONEY DID THE SAME, ATE THE IRONONG BOARD COVER, THE BEAN BAG, DVDS, CARPET, DOORS, PICTURES, SETTEE, YOU NAME IT HE CHEWED IT AND HE CRIED ALL DAY I WAS OUT.

LUCKILY HE JAS OUT GROWN THIS CHEWING AND CRYING SO NOW HE OPENS THE DOORS AND WINDOWS TO GET TO ME. I HAVE TO BOLT EVERYTHING UP. HE ALSO ONCE CLIMBED ON THE KITCHEN SIDE AND TURNED ON THE GAS HOB!!!

DEF GAT A CAGE... I PUT THIS OFF FOR TOO LONG.

She's not too young...4 years and yes she is a rescue.

I did order her a crate before I got her but it was sent to Liverpool, I live in Kent. By the time the replacement would have come, she'd already settled in well, so we didn't bother with one. Now, obviosly we've started thinking about one...would it stop her whining though or make it worse?

How long can you leave them there?

It wouldn't be for too long I hope. I know it's not, but it seems mean to leave them in a crate. Do you think she'll grow out of it. She was fine earlier on when she was on my bed, didn't move an inch but I can't leave her there long as my pet rats are in my room too.

i used to think it would be mean to leave them in a crate to. but now look at them they go in them all time i just leave the door open for them and they go in them all the time . i think up to about 4hour maybe ok to leave them in ther but if im wrong somone with more experience will corret me im shure here a pic of them in ther cage ....

they have one each but like to go in together lol

forgot to add blue used to cry when he was left ...but we got another whippet and our problem was solved no more crying :thumbsup:

Haven't experienced these problems but would recommend trying a crate

This was originally for Meg my whippet but have used it occasionally for the foster Greyhounds.

Maybe I haven't had the problem because I have another calm dog for company..so maybe :- " this could be the answer :- "

Well they couldn't both fit in together -_-

I would try a create. Get in contackt with the rescue you got her from and see if they can lend you one to see if it works if it does then you can get her her own. we have had a few foster is with sepertion anxiaty and creats have worked they feel safe and secure. allso leave a radio on quieatly in the backgreound or the tv so she doesnt feel alone. and when you come home dont make a fuss of her come in take your coat of make a drink give it a good 10 minets dont even make eye contact with her. then after 10 minets call her over when your ready to say hi.

If shes not getting worked up waiting for you to make a fuss of her when you get back if its not a big deal you coming home she wont get worked up waiting for you.

yes please do try a crate but dont leave her in it too long to begin with. start with short periods when you are actually at home then she will get used to it. also feed her in it if you can,(to help develop a positive relationship with it) and leave 'safe' treats like a kong in there with her when you go out..(nothing that she can choke on)

my 2 year old dog likes his crate very much, and my new whippet is happy with hers now too. it has only taken a couple of weeks to train her and today she hopped in herself when she saw me get my keys and put my shoes on. :thumbsup:

also if she is a grey buy the biggest crate you can 42" or 48". there are loads of second hand ones on ebay or as suggested ask the rescue if you can borrow one?

Hi, thanks so much for your replies, really helpful. I'll order her a crate today, I don't think the rescue will have one, they weren't kept in crates and it'll cost me £20 in petrol to get there, there's some good prices on ebay. What sort of snacks do you put in kongs?

Would you leave her water in the crate?

I don't think there's any chance I'd be allowed another dog for company, it took ages to be allowed to have her, much as I'd love a little daschund!

One day, hopefully her and that cat will be friends...they tolerate each other but don't enjoy being together too much

i dont know about anyone else, but i tend to just smear something tasty inside their kongs...like meat or fish paste. ..or a little bit of tuna, or peanut butter....or leftover gravy.....sometimes a couple of biccies but not always.

if im making a meal of it then i stuff it full but if its just for keeping them occupied then a little bit of something is enough. and do put water in, especially as the weather is hotting up. you can get hook on bowls from some crate suppliers which would give her a raised drinker but i just use heavy ceramic bowls in the corners of the cages.

I've got her a Kong and some tasty stuff to go in it.

Crate wise, I really can't fit a 48", which would be my first choice so would a 42" be okay?
