Can someone please advise me.. I am rather worried about a dog my Husband and I are about to buy. I hope this is the right venue.. appologies if it isn't!

We have found the dog for us, a beautiful Maltese puppy. Everything was going along smoothly, and we were about to make arrangements with the breeder to go and visit, and collect our new puppy. We have been communicating by email, despite the fact that I gave my BT landline number in the first stages should she wish to talk personally to us.

We have read all the literature about buying a puppy, and know that one should not buy a pedigree, kc registered etc until one has seen the puppy in it's home, with either one or both of it's parents. Just as we have reached the final stages of negotiations the breeder has just told me via email that she will not pay the kc registration fees.. that's fine with us, the cost is immaterial for the right dog.. we are happy to pay the fees.

However, she has now told me that we must pick up the dog from her vet??? and also deal with the paperwork through her vet. This is really worrying me. I want to see either one of the puppy's parent's. Also, I think it is important to see how and where she has been raised for the past nine weeks. The breeder is extremely vague in her replies to queries. What should I do??

How odd, what are they hiding. Personally if I hadn't met the pup and hadn't paid a deposit, I would go with my gut feeling, and look else where. Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

Personally if i were you- even though you really want this pup- stay away.

Do some more searching- there are bound to be fab maltese breeders out there that will welcome you into their homes to view the pups and mum.

i would say to the breeder that you no longer are happy buying a pup from her and will not be buying one from her.

.I think I'd just echo what the others said - this sounds dodgey to me - if all is legit, why on earth wouldn't it be ok for you to meet sire and dam?..............it's not as if this is an unusual request is it?

having said that, Digit was brought over from Ireland for me so I didn't meet either of his parents. It was a trust/gamble issue but - and i think this is crucial - his breeder was completely happy for me to go there. It was the logistics of doing it that made me accept the offer of him being brought over by someone else.............a big factor was that both his breeder and chaperone were k9ers, as i believe are the owners of several of his siblings :wub: :wub:

there are big alarm bells ringing for me over a breeder who will only carry out the transaction via a vet...........have you rang the vet to get his/her take on all this?

personally i'd think twice as well... things do not sound right... it does make you wonder what they are hiding & how that puppy has raised for the past couple of months..

I also didn't get to meet Beau or his parents, as he was shipped over from Tasmania. But I had no alarm bells ringing. I followed my gut instinct and, my trust in his breeder proved to be right. It's the fact that they are wanting to hand over at the vets that bothers me, very strange. If they are close enough for you to visit then what are they hiding. Wouldn't be surprised to see you back online saying that they had a hissy fit when you backed out. Don't be bullied into this. Once again good luck

If it was me then I'd not have the puppy.

What I'd now do is this.

I'd get to know some Maltese breeders. Go to some champ shows to meet 'em. Talk to the breed club people. There is most likely a puppy list. I don't know anything much about Maltese breeders but I think that they will be happy to get to know you and once they have then you are more likely to get a puppy that is brought up the way that you are happy with and have a good lasting relationship with the breeder of it.

(w00t) lol! seriously i wouldnt touch this.it stinks. :thumbsup: why any breeder would telll you to pick the dog up from the vet is beyond me.id want to see the enviroment its been brought up in and its parents too.follow the advice thats been given here its all sound and should ensure you a happy healthy puppy and a breeder who takes an interest in the pups welfare and makes sure you're happy with him too.

do you have his telephone number, could you ring him and let him know your concerns. if your still unhappy and he wont let you come to his house to see the pups i would run for the hill as well......

To urchin.. the breeder was so reticent with her/his replies that they didn't give the name of the Vet.. another thing that bothered me.

I can see you've made your decision and I think it is the decision I would've made to.

I had a bit of trouble getting papers for one of my pups from a so-called 'reputable' breeder. Turns out she just couldn't be bothered to send the forms off :rant:

Glad to hear you made the decision you have. My view is if you have ANY doubts at all then find someone else. I know it can be hard to find breeders, but don't give up, you will find the right breeder and dog for you!! If these people were not forthcoming then I'd have stayed away BIG time.

Glad youve decided to leave it, it all sounds a bit odd to me, IMO the first thing a breeder should do is ask you to go round and see the litter in its own enviroment with the mother, it dosent matter if the litter is kept inside or out as long as it is well looked after. :luck: in your search i hope you find what your looking for.

It sounds very strange doesn't it. I wonder why the puppy was at the vets anyway? If the breeder was being awkward about communicating with you then I think even if you had paid for the registration, they wouldn't have sent off the forms to the KC or you would never have been able to get the papers out of them. I think you've done the right thing.

Just had a thought !!!!!

Maybe they were scared of dog thieves and didn't want to let you know where they lived. You do hear of people turning up to see puppies and then they later get stolen.

Doesn't explain the not registering them though :unsure:
