Poo, What Do You Do With It

Our local council have been complaining about people using the public poo bins to dispose of poo from their gardens, apparently people are putting huge bagfulls in and filling the bins up. I know it can be a problem round here, the bins are often overflowing a couple of days after they've been emptied - though perhaps it's just a sign they need more bins!

I use biodegradable poo bags (the sort that are supposed to break down within a few weeks) and put them in the dustbin, which is what our council advises. I worry about the amount of plastic going into landfill, though.

I did try one of the chemical dog loos once, but it was completely useless. I have been considering getting a special worm composter thingy for dog poo - has anyone tried one of these and is it any good?

We are very lucky, we have a drain cover for the human toilet in our garden, great.
same here

And here too , The man from the council suggested the idea to me , saves any smells from building up ;)

Most houses have a drain cover some where surely .

im surprised the man from the council said put it down the drain as when we had enviromental health out to our kennels they told us specifically we must not do this. we had to have a dog loo (large one with chemicals to break it down)and if you have a large amount of waste they will consult with you about the disposal of animal faeces.this was some years ago so maybe they have changed their policy on this

I have a drain cover in my garden but never thought of disposing of 'doggie dos' that way.... thick or what? I bag mine and they go in the wheelie bin, that said I only have one dog, chances are, if I put them down the drain I am sure they would go un-noticed. Did have a blockage once, and being at the end of the line I was astonished at what some people put down their loo!!! :x :x

i feed raw and bone so the amount is smaller and when collected will go white and crumble and gets put into the composter dont know why people are stressing about putting it into household waste it will breakdown quite quickly in a landfill site alot quicker than nappies!

Yes, the poo would break down quite quickly in landfill, it's the plastic bags that are a problem. Most of the poo bags you buy are the sort that take years to bio-degrade, I've had to search around (and pay about three times the price) for the sort that break down quickly. :)

i like to throw all mine into the field adjoining my house to stop those bastrd brats playing footy against my wall.

it works a treat..nothing like hearing them all laughing at one of them whos plastered in it

Im going back about 12-15 years , They( the council) had had a complaint about smelling dog poo ( in JAN !!) from my garden  . The man came round and found no poo any where :sweating: :D , and when he asked what I did with it , I said ,` bagged and binned ` , and thats when he suggested the drain /man hole cover .

At the time I was living on my own and as you can imagine woried about having had a complaint against me , But he said not to worry as if it had been hot july or August he might think it was a valid complaint but 2 degrees Jan  .

Id had a small disagreement with the neighbours who had made this complaint a few weeks before  Shame they had nothing better do to . Mind you theyve long since moved away :b

Why do people resort to these tac tics ? Id known Ann for nearly 15 years ,and helped her with her cats and sons many times, how very sad :(

people can be so spiteful jax. this was about the same amount of time maybe a bit less.(10 or 12 years ago)we have a drain cover on our land and tbh we always used to put it down there.so when the guy from the enviromental health dept said we musnt do that we bought a dog loo thingy.i dont know why it cant be put down the main drain maybe its cos of worm eggs or something  i think to make dog disposal bags out of non biodegradeable plastic rather defeats the object of what youre trying to do.youre trying to be a responsible owner and clean up after your dog and yet it would break down much faster and have much less impact on the enviroment if you left in in the grass where your dog does it than if you put it in a plastic bag where it will stay for years without breaking down!dont make no sense at all!

I applaud you for trying to let it decompose naturally, but it does take a long time, and it will attract flies in the summer I would imagine.
I wonder if there is anyway the decomposition process can be assited, rather than having to chuck it away in plastic bags to rot for a hundred years in a landfill site? Worth investigating.

Failing that...do you have a man hole cover in your garden? Just chuck it down there and let the sewage works do the rest :- "

By the way I'm a complete hypocrite because mine poo in the local park, and I pick it up in a plastic bags and dispose of it in the park bins. I'm not proud of myself, but my two refuse to go in our garden 'cos it's too small and I can't let them wander out freely to do their business.

THE WATER PURIFICATION PROCESS DOES NOT KILL TOXICARA SO I THINK ITS NOT A GOOD IDEA TO PUT IT INTO THE WATER SYSTEM, THE COUNCIL WILL PROVIDE PET WASTE BAGS THATS WHAT I DO
