Hi

My 7 month old whippet has been off his food since Saturday, he's usually a good eater but has had very little each day.

He was sick a couple of times at the weekend (just bile) but hasn't been since, I thought he may have eaten something he shouldn't as he is a bit of a hooverer.

He is usually very lively but after his walk in the morning has done very little but lie on the sofa.

Oscar is our 1st whippet and I wondered if it was normal thing for whippets to suddenly go off their food.

I think if he doesn’t eat much in the morning I'll have to get him checked by the vet as I wouldn't want him to lose much weight as there isn't a lot of him to start with.

And advice would be much appreciated.

My only advice would be to get him to the vets as soon as you can

He may have picked up a tummy bug :x

there are a lot of quite nasty tummy bugs doing the rounds at present :( i will ask has your puppy been vaccinated though as there is a very life threatening illness called parvo which strikes very quickly , your puppy would have been much worse by now if this was the case though , this comes along with violent diarrohea (sp) too and the smell is unmistakable :(

try just giving cooled boiled water for tonight , see how he goes if no better by morn best to pop to vets , if he is getting better try him on some plain boiled chicken with rice and a tea spoon morn and eve of live natural yoghurt

i'd get him to the vets first thing tomorrow, illness can take a quick turn for the worst when they are pups and dehydration itself can kill.

i dont mean to worry you unnecessarily but just my opinion on what would be going through my mind and what i would do in your situation.

keep us posted on your little one :luck:

Hi

Many thanks - he is fully vacinated so I would have thought is was parvo as he hasn't got the other symptons.

I've managed to get him to have some yoghurt (although he would only have it if he could lick it off my fingers!) but he has turned his nose up at the chicken which is very unlike him.

I think a quick trip to the vets tomorrow will be called for just to make sure he is OK.

the MOST important thing when a dog is not eating is to maintain fluids, even if you have to dropper it in little and often

please keep us posted on how he is :huggles:

Not to put too fine a point on it but how are things at the other end? :x You say he has vomited bile, has he got the squits? More worryingly, if he is a hooverer, is there anything coming out of the bottom end? In a pup of his age a bowel obstruction could be a real possibility if things are not passing through, my friend had a collie who was a hooverer and had mega probs due to ingestion of a rubber glove!!! Don't mean to cause alarm, the advice you have been given is sound advice, keep the fluids up but, just felt I had to ask the question about the 'other end'. Sending loads of :huggles: and hope he is better soon. If in doubt consult your vet.

Hi folks

Thanks for the advice. I took Oscar to the vets today and he has a slight temperature and a stomach bug. So he's has a shot (which he didn't like at all) and a few pills for the next couple of days.

He came home and ate some rice and fish straight away (I think it was just in case I took him back to the vet!).

Now comes my next problem, what is the best way to get a whippet to take his tablets??

Cheers

Lisa

glad oscars going to be fine :huggles: dont they just worry us :sweating:

i always give tablets with a little cheese they usually dont notice the tablet then

good luck :luck:

Glad he's ok - mine will eat tablets as if they are a treat!

Otherwise hide in a piece of cheese, ham etc
