Is 'progeny' (as in definition of progeny class) restricted to the immediate descendants of the dog/bitch? or does it include all offspring eg grandchildren??

help please

puzzled

That's a really good question. I'm sure I remember a show where it was grandparents through grandchildren, but now I'm questioning it. Just looked up the definition on the KC site and it's not clear.

Will be interested in the answer.

Does anyone know for sure? I've got two different answers from the two people I've asked (both ch show judges).

The definition of progeny in my Chamber's dictionary says "offspring, descendants, race". Not much help but it implies it's not restricted to immediate offspring.

I would say that it is normally just the first generation offspring of the dog or bitch entered, but it is up to the club running the show to specify the definition of the classes that it puts on in the schedule. At a limited breed show it might be done to include grand children in order to get a better entry.

I would have thought , direct decendants . eg children , grand children etc not aunties , uncles etc as they arnt `out of` or `by them` JMO

I don't know the answer to this question, but just wanted to say for all the show secretaries out there that I LOVE these classes, and think they should be at every breed show :- "

I know it's undoubtedly not practical etc, and maybe there aren't that many entries, but I just really enjoy watching these classes

At most clubs id it only first generation progeny, but as Liz said, each Club can decide the definition for their classes. If you are entering and intend to take grandchildern, it's best to give the Secretary a ring to check. I do know that at South West Whippet no grandchildern are allowed. I asked last year when Ellie was in season, which meant that Harriet only had 2 children there, but she did have 3 from the next generation, but we couldn't go in. :( There weren't any other entries, so Ann got to keep the rosette for the next show!!

Thanks Vanna - yes it was South West I had in mind :)

Hope to see you there

I should think it should be irst generation and the kc or the show organisers should make it clear (whatever they decide)

progeny classes are a great idea and I wish more shows had them
